We run a Japanese horror-focused podcast, and when The Human Centipede was screened in 4K, we devoted an entire hour and forty minutes of the show to talking about it. What we said was this: the immoral, public-decency-defying authorial voice of your films has a magnificent bizarreness that embodies the essence of expression itself. It is satirical, and at the same time more political than almost any so-called political film. The fact that your movies enrage people as “worthless, vulgar films” has encouraged me for years as a creator. That ability to move an audience — to hit them in the gut — is, to me, what makes your cinema so great. I do not see your films as mere shock-for-shock’s-sake. I sincerely believe they are art itself. The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) in particular is the ultimate Grand Guignol. The first time I saw it in a theater, I cried. It is one of my all-time favorite horror films. We Japanese audiences talked on the podcast about how deeply we hope The Onania Club will be distributed in Japan. Any distribution company that cannot release a Tom Six film should go under! I also watched The End of Tom Six on YouTube. It is a fantastic film. I was moved by your anger and sorrow, and by the sincere attitude toward cinema and expression that comes through in it. Your announcement of retirement is sad.
