It is both a history lesson and a love letter to these films. This is not a film about Star Wars, but about the way it came into our living rooms. About the formats that followed one another, and what each of them brought to picture and sound. ALREADY DONE: THE FOUNDATIONS ARE LAID • The trailer set the groundwork for the project: building the set, the lighting, the choice of camera equipment. • The research on the editions and on the period hardware is done, and so is the negotiation with the partners. • The concepts and the design look are approved in 3D. • The cast, the composer, the mixing and sound design team, the art direction and the book's authors are all lined up, as is the company that will produce the packaging. Her dream appears in the form of spotlessly clean Soda Pop Joe (Karel Fiala), who turns out to be a traveling sales rep for Kolaloka Soda (an entertaining pun meaning “a sip of Cola”), which he relentlessly hawks in the film’s barbed satire of Western consumerism. (His rendition – dubbed by Karel Gott, one of the pop-stars of the era – of "Smith & Wessons on my hip / Nothing else comes near my lips ... Kolaloka!" is one of the film’s many musical gems.) Produced by Toei Animation and directed by Yugo Serikawa (THE LITTLE PRINCE & THE EIGHT-HEADED DRAGON, CYBORG 009), the film opens on images of a ruined graveyard and a castle lab with gruesome animal heads and bone saws – and never lets up from there, as Dr. Frankenstein (voiced by Nachi Nozawa), his wife and daughter are followed by the tormented creature (voiced by Hosei Komatsu), who is barely able to mutter his own name (he’s known as just “Franken” in the film.) The hulking, shambling “Franken” ultimately emerges as a pitiable and despairing figure on par with Boris Karloff’s incarnation from the 1930s (and watch for the scene where he staggers into a church and compares the wound on his hand to the stigmata on the crucified Jesus!). Newly restored in 4K from the original camera negative by Deaf Crocodile and Toei Animation, this excellent and too-long overlooked Gothic gem takes its place as one of the finest Japanese animated horror and sci-fi films from the 1980s.
