A couple of days late, but many congratulations to graduate student Youmian Yan for defending her thesis this week!! Dr. Yan gave an incredible presentation on her work on mitochondrial protein import. Well done and richly deserved. 🥳🎉
I am so excited to see my first, first author manuscript live on bioRxiv! I remember the day I went to my PI's office and said "I want to investigate the skeletal muscles of these mice" without any idea of how to necropy them. Striated muscle physiologist incoming!
New preprint from the lab, led by the ever-talented grad student Tessa Lochetto
@tloch_! We find that loss of Pptc7 decreases lean mass, induces skeletal muscle dysfunction, and causes metabolic derangements in adult mice: doi.org/10.64898/2026.07.13.… /1
I’m currently drafting some PhD defense acknowledgments. Do I have a defense date? No. But, I do not want to forget a single person that helped me (eventually) reach the finish line. Start early. 🫶🏼
I am excited for the (likely) last conference of my PhD training! Let’s connect if you’re here. #APSSummit @APSPhysiology
Thank you @American_Heart for helping me attend this conference through my predoctoral fellowship!

Thrilled to share our work "Recessive PPTC7 deficiency triggers excessive mitophagy to cause a severe inborn error of metabolism with hypomyelinating leukodystrophy" - a collaborative effort documenting the first cases of PPTC7 mutations in humans. 1/n

Really thrilled to share our work on mitochondrial presequence strength @JCellBiol. We establish quantitative parameters to better define "strong" and "weak" presequences in vitro and in vivo. This work was spearheaded by the ever talented Youmian Yan, a grad student in my lab.
Youmian Yan, @IanofBristol, @nieminm et al. define quantitative parameters underlying the strength of mitochondrial-targeting presequences, and demonstrate that yeast require strong presequences to facilitate select metabolic pathways in #mitochondria. hubs.la/Q03-1x5l0

Very excited to share our latest work, “Mitochondrial presequences harbor variable strengths to maintain organellar function,” led by the fantastically talented @WashUBBSB graduate student Youmian Yan. A 🧵

My heart hurts for my Alma mater right now. My prayers go out to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy. abcnews.go.com/amp/US/active…
In search of a modified gomori stain kit that will stain mouse sk. muscle cryosections (myofibers = blue/green, nuclei = red/purple, ragged red fibers = red). Has anyone used VitroView?? #myotwitter
A wonderful conference! I am so glad I got to attend this meeting during my PhD career. I look forward to attending more in the future years!
So incredibly happy to announce I have been awarded a 2-year Predoctoral Fellowship from the @AHAScience. Thank you to my amazing PI (@nieminm), co-mentor (@bnfinck), rec letter writers, and @The_DataDragon for all the support, feedback, and encouragement during this process.🫀🥳
Big s/o to my rec letter writers - @lab_meyer, @alexholehouse, & Dr. Robb Tomko (FSU) as I could not do this without them. Also, thank you to my lab mates for the supportive culture they foster and their continued belief in me.

Interested in BNIP3/NIX-mediated mitophagy? Check out our new review, written with @LabFriedman, about recent advances in the field and our thoughts on the regulation of these mitophagy receptors in space and time. doi.org/10.1042/BST20221364
Honored to be celebrated by the @WUSTLCTL alongside the amazing and kind, @MadisonString_. Cheers to becoming #futureeducators!
Happy #PostdocAppreciationWeek to our lab's two postdocs, @KeriKozul & @thiagonmenezes.🥳🙌 Thanks for all you do for our lab and me personally!
I don’t know if I’m in the minority or all PhD students think about how they’re going to thank & acknowledge their PI at their thesis defense one day. All I can say is please put lots of tissue boxes in my defense room because I tear up each time I think about what I’ll say.
SHVM 2024, also known as my 1st conference of grad school, was a success! Thank you to those who provided great insight and suggestions on my project, @thiagonmenezes for accompanying me (and hanging up my poster lol), and the amazing friends from @UAlberta pictured here!
@Taninshf & Sally (of the @JussherLab) are those pictured here with @thiagonmenezes & I. Thanks for making my first conference even brighter and for helping celebrate my birthday! Long live metabolism & wonderful friends. #SHVM
