One year I taught the same class, Slavery and the American Revolution, at Columbia and a max security NY state prison. Level of discussion higher in latter, but level of writing much lower. Getting rid of standardized tests will make elite class consolidation even easier.
As colleges shift toward test-optional admissions, essays will become more important. This computational analysis of 60,000 applications to UC finds essay characteristics correlate even more closely with family income than SAT scores. (via @mitchellatedf) cepa.stanford.edu/content/es…

Why can't Presidential debate moderators mute the mic on rail-jumping participants? Seems like one of the most beneficial lessons of the Covid/Zoom era has been ignored.

I’m NERVOUS again- about young adults. Korea’s pop wide #COVID19 tests have revealed something scary: YOUNG PEOPLE are leading carriers. (Italy only tests the rather sick, biases to old people). If the socially active age20-29 truly carry 30% of all cases— that means trouble! 😨

I'm struck by the fact that back then, building the national security state was a problem-driven enterprise (however poorly prioritized or misconceived many of the problems may have been). Too soon, it succumbed to the logic of its own preservation and expansion.

As campuses welcome new students, I hope presidents and others will emphasize that students share responsibility for each other’s success and well-being & that they are there to learn how that shared responsibly works in a democratic society.

Asking census respondents their citizenship status is a reckless stunt designed to intimidate our immigrant communities. The census must be absent of political interference. Period. strib.mn/2uuho8v

Author @dsallentess shares how her cousin's story -- a tale of gangs, jails and eventual death -- showcases how the American war on drugs, especially how the war forces drugs "into secrecy", makes at-risk youth a target.
