New review paper on the dark side of organisational learning
What if organizations become better at doing the wrong things?
In our new Academy of Management Annals paper, we explore how learning itself can reinforce rigidity, amplify errors, and create self-reinforcing cycles of misfortune, a phenomenon we capture as learning-based organizational zemblanity.
The key questions for organizations: How can they recognize when learning is taking them in the wrong direction, and how can they break out of these cycles?
Looking forward to your thoughts and any examples you’ve encountered!

My latest for @TheEconomist: AI writing is taking over politics.
10% of what was is said in Parliament is now AI-drafted, per Pangram. Yet more in the House of Representatives, or in Australia and Canada.

Very interesting post from Paul Goldsmith-Pinkham on the rise of AI writing in economics. He got a large token budget from Pangram to analyse a large number of preprints.
One of the interesting results of his analysis, which aligns with my experience, is that AI writing is harder for humans to read. It’s not just the overused AI expressions. AI outputs are written in very good English but they are not optimised for human psychology, including our limited attention and memory spans.

When I wrote the first draft of what would ultimately become THE SERENDIPITY MINDSET, the @FinancialTimes Bracken Prize competition was a wonderful way to gain momentum and visibility.
If you're under 35 and are working on a business book, it might be worth a look. The winner receives £15,000, while the two finalists receive £2,000 each, and they get to connect with publishers and agents. The deadline is 30 September 2026.
If you have questions or are looking for a proposal template, let me know.
Kudos to @andrewtghill and the FT team for supporting young authors to turn their ideas into books! brackenprize.live.ft.com/

I'm SO SICK of the shameless use of LLMs to spit out garbage papers that merely look legitimate. It's a waste of everyone's time, and I'm frustrated that I'm expected to review work the authors didn't care to read. We need far better monitoring systems to contain this madness.

Who in the fuck sees someone die and then thinks ‘Hey let me use this opportunity to promote my new book’?
The Jason Arday scandal/fiasco/tragedy is a prime example of "pluralistic ignorance." No sapient being could believe his ziggurat of whoppers, but each may have privately thought that everyone else believed them. This happens when the expression of an idea is stigmatized or punished, as obviously happened here: anyone expressing common-sense incredulity was tarred as a racist, ableist, and abettor of suicide (not to mention threatened by a barracuda law firm and questioned by the police). For more on pluralistic ignorance and other extraordinary popular delusions, see When Everyone Knows That Everyone Knows...: Common Knowledge and the Mysteries of Money, Power, and Everyday Life (preorder paperback here; out in a few weeks). amazon.com/When-Everyone-Kno… nytimes.com/2026/08/15/world…

He committed wrongs, but he didn't murder anybody. Humans are relational beings, and at the end of the day, a family has lost a father, son and brother. Their lives will never be the same. Even if you have no sympathy for Arday, consider them before you type.
