Congrats to all of the #physics Nobel Laureates! Today's prize combines atomic physics and lasers--two of our favorite things here at the Atlas.
Electrons’ movements in atoms and molecules are so rapid that they are measured in attoseconds. An attosecond is to one second as one second is to the age of the universe.

In 1935, a relatively unknown Japanese physicist, Hideki Yukawa predicted the mass of an undiscovered particle related to the strong force. Physicists confirmed the pi meson’s existence in 1947, and Yukawa received the Nobel Prize in 1949. quantamagazine.org/colliders…

Quantum states work by a different set of rules than classical states. For example, classical waves can't climb over a barrier that's too tall. #quantum waves can get past hurdles by tunneling through. Check out bit.ly/42ZNpRB to learn more.

Weaving superconductivity
Today’s #PhotoOfTheWeek pictures a Rutherford cabling machine. In 2019, it was used for the assembly of the high-performance superconducting cables to be used in the High-Luminosity LHC.
The development at CERN of magnesium diboride cables and other advanced superconducting systems for the #HiLumiLHC is driving applications beyond fundamental research.
#DidYouKnow that the #LHC is the biggest application of superconductivity in the world?
