Apple Client side scanning isn't a win for child safety.
- This won't increase in CSAM reporting, Apple was already scanning iCloud photos since 2020.
- And there's an existing pile of CSAM reports that won't get investigated. Law enforcement don't have resources.

Differences between most server based CSAM scanning and Apples client side scanning:
- server side scanning happens when files are shared, not stored.
- server side scanning happens in a fixed jurisdiction.
- server side scanning has information about provenance of the material.

Months could pass by before the suspect is accused and any exculpatory forensic evidence/logs etc. might be deleted from the device. Storing forensic information like the upload time stamp, originating IP, user accounts, email addresses etc. is important.

Apple will make a report to LE/NCMEC without having enough information about the provenance of the material.
In a case where it was put on a suspects device by a malicious actor or by accident. Client side scanning does little to preserve any exculpatory forensic evidence.
