Look to the editors, not the reporters
This story had all the hallmarks of being written and rewritten by a committee of editors and lawyers
There is just no way the NYT can escape a permanent hit to their credibility without a full investigation into how they managed to blow this story and throw the women involved under the bus.
They had a story that should have ended a political campaign and instead spun in into a partisan defense for the candidate that put targets on the backs of the victims.
And for what? The truth came out just a month later. They didn’t save Platner.

Democrats are growing anxious that the Graham Platner fiasco has left them with just under four months to throw a campaign together for a new candidate and to get the oyster farmer’s base of loyal followers to “cool off” from his implosion.
While many Dem strategists argue that Platner’s announced exit has improved their chances against incumbent Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), they acknowledge that the debacle created a lot of headaches for the party, eerily reminiscent of where they were under Joe Biden two years ago.

Everybody's focused on Lyndsey Fifield's experiences with Platner because she's a Republican. But here's what Jenny Racicot, a lifelong Democrat who dated Platner and spoke to the NYT about an "unsettling" experience she had with him years ago, has to say about him.
Speaking with @TheFP, Racicot explained that she is a supporter of Platner’s policies—but not who he is as a person.
“I had good memories with him, but also, there’s a side of him that I had an experience with that caused me to cut off all contact and to not support him as a person,” she said. “It was eating me alive to see somebody that I know to be one way publicly portray themselves a different way.” W/@FrannieBlock:
