Today is my 40th birthday. Here are all the things that I know at 40 which I wish I knew at 20. Starting with… 1. Your relationship with others is a direct reflection of your relationship with yourself. If you treat yourself poorly, then you will unconsciously seek out and tolerate others who treat you poorly. If you treat yourself with dignity and respect, then you will only tolerate others who treat you with dignity and respect. Get right with yourself. Get right with the world.

Thinking of my friend Steve on his birthday — the lives he touched, the vision he shared, and the profound impact he had on our world. “We’re here to put a dent in the universe. Otherwise, why else even be here?”

I still think about the recruiter who, after starting in my organisation, asked to shadow several software engineer interviews. And then went on to coach candidates about how to better prepare, areas to cover, and offered help. Only accidentally learned about it. What a legend.

Having survived two previous market resets (2001, 2009), people frequently ask me how this 2022 market reset is different and how it is the same. The obvious similarity is that valuation multiples have collapsed. We went from a "glass very full" mindset to one with many concerns.

I have to say, I’m very proud of these green boxes. All of these green boxes. And I’m proud to work at a browser maker that truly does care about web designers and developers — and the future of the web for everyday people. With browser engineers who worked very hard this year.

“Simplicity, carried to an extreme, becomes elegance” -Jon Franklin Being relentlessly simple everywhere you can results in a clean, maintainable architecture. It also leaves you with enough time to identify and focus on the parts that end up needing something more involved.
if you've been working in computing for > 15 years -- are there fundamentals that you learned "on the job" 15 years ago that you think most people aren't learning on the job today? (I'm thinking about how for example nobody has ever paid me to write C code)
