I’m fully vaccinated, have been locked down for 16 days now without contact with anyone except immediate family and close neighbors, and have tested negative all nine rounds of tests while being locked down But I’m not allowed to leave home to go find food

Leo Tang has been arrested in Hong Kong for clapping in a court hearing. He’s accused not of contempt of court, but SEDITION. From a legal standpoint, I really can’t overstate how insane this is, even by the typically bonkers standards of the national security police.
Leo Tang, ex-vice chair of disbanded Confederation of Trade Unions, was arrested at his home around 6am for intention to bring into hatred or contempt or to excite disaffection against the judiciary, at a West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts hearing on January 4 morning - activists

2/Also notable: in the hours since this piece was published, the natl security police have yet again trumped themselves by arresting HKers who merely clapped in a courtroom & accusing them of subversion. It seems speech, claps, gestures, grunts, eye rolls are now off limits.

Everyone should be able to choose absolutely. But freedom is not the right word for hijab. Only after I took it off I realised how restricting it had been to wear that for so many years. I don’t support banning it at all but idealising hijab does not make sense

There is no such thing as "the poor". There is the dispossessed, the exploited, and the dehumanized.

Maybe the single most useful tool to control the spread of coronavirus: public shaming. The rise in disdain and judgment passed as people dissect the latest wave of cases in HK is impressively effective.

People believe we need growth because they start from the assumption of scarcity. But there is no scarcity. There is inequality.

The richest 5% capture 46% of total global GDP. That means nearly half of all the resources we use, and half of all the emissions we emit, is done in order to make rich people richer. In what world does this make *any* ecological sense? jasonhickel.org/blog/2020/10…
