Looking at my race photo earlier, I realised that it's one of the few photos that show some of my scars. 30 years ago I had a motorcycle accident. Doctors said I'd never walk without a limb, never mind run. I count my blessings every day for being able to run, no matter how slow.

I think many of us working in tech tend to forget that the reason software engineering vs other engineering fields pays (a lot!) more, is a lot more flexible (WFH/remote), and has better perks:
Because this field changes much faster than other engineering fields. The premium is because fewer people are able/willing to pick up new technologies, methodologies so quickly.
But the field had ~10-20 years of stability, and so lots of folks forgot this is why a premium exists. And that AI is just another tech wave: software engineers who pick it up and master it will generally fare better; those not will struggle a lot more.

Doc: "Maybe you should get yourself tested."
Me: "Nope, I'm fine. I've been married 30 years, doc"
Doc: "How certain can you be?"
Me: "I've never written a line of PHP in my life!"
Doc: "Ok... but your wife?"

A lot of people on X are looking for ways to get fit, build muscle, and look younger.
I’m 76. My skin is wrinkled. My face is weathered. Those are the years I’ve lived, and they show.
But underneath that visible aging, the muscles carrying me through life still respond when I ask them to work.
I keep challenging them. Gradually asking more of them. Giving myself time to recover, then showing up again.
To me, that effort sends a message: “We still need this strength. We’re not done yet.”
I started at 50. Skinny fat, with very little muscle. By my late 50s, I was stronger than I’d ever been. That gave me something to build on—and a reason to keep going.
More than 25 years later, I’m still working at it.
There’s always something that needs attention. Weakness. Atrophy. Stiffness. A movement that’s getting harder than it should be. I pay attention and work on what I find.
You never reach a point where the work is finished. Your body keeps changing, and you have to keep responding.
But I’m still strong enough to help my family, keep up with my grandchildren, and participate in the life I want.
That’s how I measure winning at 76.
It takes time. Starting in your 50s can still give you years of strength to build on. I know because I’ve lived it.
I’m not done yet. You don’t have to be either.

Μια βασική αλήθεια που συνειδητοποίησα ότι ισχύει σε απίστευτα μεγάλο βαθμό τώρα που άρχισα ξανά το dating στα 45+ είναι αυτό που λέει ο φίλος @technolagnos ...

A middleware engineer in South Korea wrote to me, seeking help on what to do now that their manager is "blinded by GenAI hype" and set an "AI token usage" KPI. This eng is using v little AI, so manager is poking them to use more.
My response: your manager is trying to help you
O-M-G!!! This is the best feature addition in a long while on this up - being able to fold back after clicking “show more”! In this case I actually wanted to read all of it but very often I don’t and then have to scroll for ages. Well done 👍

I’m learning a lot about myself lately. Spurred on by my children’s neurodiversity assessments, I recognised a lot of their traits in myself. I decided to assess myself too and to the complete lack of surprise of my wife, turns out I’m neurodiverse too. That probably explains a lot about my life. Anyway, not quite sure why I’m sharing this, perhaps to say to fellow Gen Xers like myself, who grew up at a time we didn’t really understand much about neurodiversity that perhaps some of the behaviours and traits can be explained, and the ones that are positive in your life harvested while the ones that make it difficult managed better. Learning more about ones self and what’s going on in ones brain can only really be a good thing. Onwards.
Out of the whole Hamas bodyguard thing that’s in the news there’s one detail that really freaks me out, as unfortunately we’re used to the core of the issue, ie how terrorists find welcome in these shores. It’s the fact that this guy got British citizenship. I did that too, and I was proud to do so, and meant every word when I swore allegiance to the crown. And now I’m potentially in the same bucket as that person who should never has been here on the first place, had never been granted asylum and absolutely never has been cleared to gain the privilege of being a British citizen. We are not the same, and I hope we sort this sort of issue out before the people who are -justifiably- mad about it happening come after people like me because of it. FFS

If the M&S Christmas advert isn’t a squad of potty mouthed SAS operatives abseiling through a house window to deliver some pigs in blankets to an accompaniment of a jazz version of an NWA song im leaving the country.
