Protests are spreading across Europe. France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Greece and even Albania have seen or will see massive clashes these weeks. Expect many reasonable grievances to be exploited by the extremes and to degenerate into vicious urban guerrilla warfare.

A brutal period of unfathomable pain for households and businesses. Yet, the counter-factual would have been catastrophic. Many mistakes and lessons learned. Much progress and some regression. Undeniable improvement and still a lot to be fixed. Never underestimate the Greeks!
After the financial crisis, public spending in Greece was cut by 25%, the civil service was slashed from one million to slightly over 600,000, and pensions were cut 11 times. But now it is growing again, its debt is falling, and its borrowing costs are below Britain and France.

This is an awesome chart.

Might be a brutal negotiating move, but Greece should threaten to cut the UK off its supply of feta until it gets the Parthenon sculptures back.

I will neither forget nor ever forgive Krugman and Stiglitz, both advocating for a destructive NO vote to Greece’s referendum and promoting the exact opposite POV 17 years ago from the comfort of distance and a beautiful academic armchair. We Greeks paid the price. And remember.

Greece absolutely deserves this success. It has taken all the hard-but-necessary decisions to secure sustainable finances and real economic growth. It stayed the course. Will France even start it?

“Here, in Athens, we found the first realisation of [such qualities] - fierce individuality and relentless ambition, daring exploration and invention, a yearning for discovery, for adventure, risk, and glory…Straining to peer into the depths of the unknown.” The speechwriter must have read my book…
“The Greeks seem to have an almost mystical hold on our memory. They call us back to them, again and again.” He’s right…
