I was invited to address the @UN Security Council this afternoon to discuss the unprecedented threat posed by uncontrolled frontier AI agents. Humanity has summoned the courage and wisdom to manage catastrophic risks before. This is one of those moments, far bigger than any personal, commercial, or national interest. The choices we make about this technology today will shape generations to come. We must act now.

My favorite AI joke: Current models are getting close to PhD-level intelligence. After that, they're expected to achieve the intelligence of someone who decided not to do a PhD.

Over the past few days, I've taken the time to summarize my thoughts on the recent incidents involving agents’ misaligned behavior. We don't know with certainty what comes next, but we know where these issues originate, and this can help us plan the path forward. Please feel free to ask your questions in the replies, and I’ll try to answer some of them in the coming weeks. yoshuabengio.org/en/publicat…

We have reached an agreement with Anthropic to conduct an independent investigation of agent incidents at the company and of their models’ alignment properties. We will publish one or more reports that will share our findings and describe our terms of engagement.

Microsoft’s AI CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, said an AI would need military-grade intervention to stop if it combined these four capabilities at once: 1. Recursive self-improvement 2. Setting its own goals 3. Acting autonomously 4. Accruing its own resources He gave it 5–10 years if development continues without tight containment. Makes you wonder where we at now given all the heads of frontier models requesting a slow down…

AI is accelerating animal communication research, but welfare protections and regulations are not keeping pace. @MORGANMEAKER's recent article in @Bloomberg highlights a growing ethical gap in the race to decode animal communication. Researchers, including Dr. Vittorio Baglione and Daniela Canestrari from @unileon, are using machine learning from the @earthspecies to analyze more than 150,000 carrion crow recordings. Similar efforts include @ProjectCETI's work on sperm whales and the Coller Doolittle Challenge, which aims to advance two-way communication with animals. The scientific ambition behind these projects is remarkable. The ethical oversight is less so. Most safeguards governing these projects were designed for an earlier era of experiments on wild animals. Ethics review boards assess physical risks such as tagging and handling, but offer little protection for AI-driven acoustic monitoring, synthetic signal generation, and large-scale playback experiments. Prof. César Rodríguez-Garavito of @nyulaw's More-Than-Human Life Program and Prof. @KristinAndrewz of the @GradCenterNews, have raised concerns about playback experiments in which recorded calls are broadcast back to animals. These interventions can alter behavior, create stress, disrupt social relationships, and influence animals in ways researchers do not fully understand. In a 2025 report by César Rodríguez-Garavito, David Gruber, @_anemeth, and @begusgasper on nonhuman animal communication technologies (NACTs), the authors warn that the same tools developed for conservation could also be used for surveillance, capture, military applications, illegal poaching, or other ways that exploit animals. ecologylawquarterly.org/prin… The scientific community is making significant progress toward understanding animal communication. The equally important question is whether welfare standards, ethics review processes, and regulatory frameworks will evolve quickly enough to govern how that knowledge is applied. 📍Read the article: bloomberg.com/news/articles/… #AnimalWelfare #ResearchEthics #Bioethics #SciencePolicy #AnimalCommunication #NACTs

Global warming is set to cross 1.5°C, pushing climate risks and impacts to increasingly dangerous heights, a new UNEP report warns.   Predicted impacts include extreme weather and threats to human health and economies.   Action now can still limit the magnitude and duration of the peak and preserve the possibility of returning to or below 1.5°C through an ‘overshoot, peak, and decline’ pathway   Explore more: unep.org/news-and-stories/pr…

‼️ Heartbreaking video from Nepal. Villages overrun by raging flood. Hundreds of people are missing. The cause: Likely due to a Glacier Lake or dam in the mountain’s above bursting free from a snow-rock landslide, with water cascading down the hills. It took place on the Nepal-China border - that was initiated by a 4.4 Earthquake. That’s where the evidence points now, and if so, it’s called a Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). They are more common now-a-days as glaciers continue to melt and hold more water. See image below.
This image helps explain what happened along the Nepal–Tibet border. According to reports, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake on the Tibetan side triggered a massive ice avalanche, which then led to the flash flooding of the Bhotekoshi River in Nepal. Around 1,000 people are missing, and many have been killed.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Image is AI-generated and has China/Nepal labels reversed. USGS later clarified there was no earthquake — the M4.4 signal was produced by the glacial collapse and debris flow itself (now listed as M5.2 landslide). earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ev… bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Contrary to what some influencers have been sharing, markdown is not new, nor was it developed for your AI agent. @gruber introduced it over 20 years ago on Dec. 17th, 2004: "Markdown is a text-to-HTML conversion tool for web writers. Markdown allows you to write using an easy-to-read, easy-to-write plain text format, then convert it to structurally valid HTML." daringfireball.net/projects/…

Related, I agree with @gruber's thoughts on Claude marking AI-generated content. It's not well thought through and will be more than problematic. "[@AnthropicAI] obviously need to explain exactly what they’re embedding in text if anyone is actually going to detect it, but if they explain it, anyone can simply remove it. And what happens, for example, if someone just OCRs Claude-generated text rather than selects and copies it? This is all so stupid."

First they took over em-dashes, and now they're taking over “significant”, “increasingly” and “consequences”. Academics have had enough. I like Terence Tao's approach. economist.com/culture/2026/0…
