I have dreaded writing this, but I want to offer @taoneal a full-throated congratulations on this amazing opportunity for @DeptofWar. As a leader, you hate to see great employees leave, but this is a win for @CardinalWV, Tiffany, & our country. Bravo!

“Assigning a novel is not enough. Effective instruction requires building background knowledge and vocabulary, fostering sustained attention, practicing fluency, and creating classroom cultures where all students engage with the text.”

“If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions.
“If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people.
“Those who wish to proceed in that direction can not lay claim to progress. They are reactionary. Their ideas are not more modern, but more ancient, than those of the Revolutionary fathers.”

If you added up the dollars public schools spend on trips and activities to "reward" students after annual state tests are done, without even the pretense of any academic benefit, you could fund ESAs until the sun goes out.
SCANDAL: Arizona ESA families go on educational field trips just like public school kids! 😱

In the April issue of @Commentary I review James Traub's new book, "The Cradle of Citizenship." I wish I shared his faith in civic education to "help save our democracy." Trouble is, America’s public schools don’t seem to want the job.

Replacing a superintendent won't raise reading scores.
West Virginia's Special Circumstance Reviews found that takeover districts share a common academic failure: incoherent standards, no vetted curriculum, and no system for improving instruction. A meaningful takeover rebuilds from the ground up.
Takeover must mean turnaround.

In 2008, 62% of teachers said they were very satisfied with their job.
In 2022, that dropped to 12%.

Professors of ed: "We know that the research finds direct instruction doesn't work!"
The research: "All of the estimated effects (math, reading, language, spelling, affective outcomes, parent-teacher views) were positive and statistically significant"
That's 328 studies

Appears to be under the impression that public high schools in America teach 16th century English literature. Or literature at all. (One reason they don’t is that for every thing people “should know” there’s some guy saying schools gotta start doing it.) Schools should make kids read books. They should teach science math history economics languages art and music really well (they don’t currently). That’s plenty. Every parent in America should be teaching how credit cards work.

Recent paper in The Lancet makes many practical arguments about SEL that I’ve made about school-based mental health programs: they’re ambiguous to the point of uselessness, and they confuse parents about roles and responsibilities of the school.

What’s amazing is that this trend has been going on for over a decade and it’s still being treated with surprise. No political will to try to fix it.

Public school dollars are increasingly going to two things: teacher pension debt and non-teaching staff. That’s why teacher salaries are stagnant in many states despite record funding levels.
Regarding staffing, it’s more than just “administrators.”
Public schools have been adding instructional aides and student support staff (e.g. social workers, psychologists, SLPs, etc.) to their payrolls.
Here’s what pre-pandemic growth looked like:

K-12 education spending has exploded higher while test scores have flatlined or fallen. At national level and in every state.
Administrator vs teacher spending graph looks similar. Admin explodes higher, teacher wages flatlined.
What else explains this abysmal performance?

Just a reminder for all and sundry—you cannot successfully insult me. You can try but I was born with a massive and unshakeable ego. This goes double if you are a photo-less anonymous account because we all already know what that means.
"Underfunded" or mismanaged?
This is the same question districts across the country should be answering after receiving millions in highly flexible ESSER dollars.
They had choices. They could address core facilities problems like air conditioning, mold, and deferred maintenance, or they could pile on new ongoing contracts and commitments.
Temporary money was treated like permanent money, and now mismanagement is being repackaged as underfunding.
The delightful @CherylTusken peels back the layers in Montana, but make no mistake, this is happening everywhere.
A recent article in the HelenaIR had a shocking headline that stated Montana school infrastructure is underfunded by a whopping $100million dollars.💰 But is this a function of not adequately funding our school systems, or is there more to the story?
In this week’s newsletter, @CherylTusken digs into how school districts spent COVID relief dollars, known as ESSER funds, and whether the current funding formula is serving - or hindering - Montana school districts.🏫

Restorative Justice, one of the worst system-level strategies you can imagine. I've lost track of the number of schools I have supported out of this well-meant but destructive model, where behaviour has spiralled out of control because boundaries have become meaningless. This article demonstrates exactly why, and how it happened in the US. It is a cautionary tale for the age.
The extraordinary thing is how it was implemented so far and so fast with *almost no credible evidence to suggest that we should*. It was strategy based on vibes. 'This feels right.'
It was also yet another triumph of education elites over education experts: no one in school was crying out for this. Nobody was saying 'please make it impossible for us to send students out, or reprimand them, or set boundaries, if they disrupt or harass their peers.'
But that's what they got, and they were penalised if they didn't.
RJ can be a useful tool. But it's closer to a glass cutter than a screwdriver; it's niche, not the default.
