"This is not a church that should be teaching people to obey without thinking — or, worse, that they will be blessed for obeying a church leader when they know the leader is wrong."

It took more than a hundred years for @Ch_JesusChrist to say that black families can be together forever too.
Will it take a hundred more to say, we’re sorry?

I've appreciated the many good, thoughtful takes on the Wilcox fiasco. It shows there is so much more work to do, that not all is well in Zion. I have lots of thoughts, but I'm especially reminded of this obscure parable by Jesus:

Replying to @SeanBurke
Yes, Brother Wilcox, Brigham Young WAS racist. Let’s own that, acknowledge that church leaders can be wrong, and resolve to be better today, instead of digging in and trying to make excuses for past wrongs rooted in racism.
Another great analysis from @BenjaminEPark These #MormonAmerica teases are one of my favorite parts of the Mormon Twittersphere.
Okay, it's been a while, so here's a #MormonAmerica thread on the LDS Church being forced to reckon with racial ideas, doctrine, and folklore that persisted long after 1978. The story includes recent converts, scholars, leaked media, BYU, and, of course, Mitt Romney. /1

Imagine if President @NelsonRussellM gave as forceful and specific a talk against racist church teachings as he did against the word "mormon" and scoured every inch of the church to eliminate it in the same way. Gospel Topics essay hasn't gotten enough attention.
I’ve been very lucky to have listeners who pass along great book/interview recommendations. (Please keep them coming btw) In preparation for Season 2 of the podcast-what should I be reading?? 📖👀

Fascinating trio of podcasts @talkMormonism & @Taylorpetrey track parallels in Church arguments against inter-racial & same-sex marriage; @Mormonstories on Dallin Oak's talk on religious freedom, LGBTQ rights & BYU electroshock treatments My thoughts:

I don’t think it’s an overstatement to describe @TaylorPetrey’s “Tabernacles of Clay” as one of the most important contributions to Mormon studies. We cover a range of topics in this interview including the church’s past opposition to interracial marriage, the impact of feminism
It’s always a pleasure to chat with scholars like @TaylorPetrey about Mormonism. We discussed his book “Tabernacles of Clay,” changing narratives within the church around gender and sexuality, and recent remarks made by Elder Holland while at BYU. Episode on Friday.
