ALT How do you assess student handwriting? Alphabet Task During the alphabet task, students write the alphabet in order from memory as many times as they can in one minute. Copy Task During the copy task, students copy a given text as many times as possible in 90 seconds.

ALT Alphabet Task This task provides information about students’ letter identification and formation skills which are both important for beginning writers. Specifically, the alphabet task can help teachers to identify if students can (a) associate each letter name to its shape, (b) form each letter shape correctly, and (c) retrieve and write letters quickly.

ALT Copy Task By asking students to copy text as opposed to creating their own, demands on other cognitive elements of writing (e.g., text generation and executive functions) are removed, permitting more precise measurement on students’ legibility and rate.
