India's #UPI has disrupted that model with scale, interoperability and extremely low-cost digital payments. Competition is here — and it is only going to get bigger. Let's separate FACTS FROM FEAR-MONGERING 👇 💰 WHO PAYS MDR? NOT THE CUSTOMER. THE MERCHANT. Under the MDR structure being discussed: 🔹 Up to ₹2,000 → MDR: 0% 🔹 ₹2,000–₹75,000 → MDR: 0.4% 🔹 Above ₹75,000 → MDR capped at a maximum of ₹300 🔹 ₹2 lakh or ₹5 lakh → still capped at a maximum of ₹300 🔹 Sending money to family/friends → NO MDR 🔹 96% of UPI transactions are under ₹2,000 → 0% MDR So let's be absolutely clear: MDR is not a tax on the customer. It is a merchant-side payment-processing cost, similar in principle to the processing charges associated with card payments. And UPI remains dramatically different from traditional high-cost payment models. 🇮🇳 THE BIGGER STORY UPI is already operating at extraordinary scale. As volumes continue to grow, India needs continuous investment in: ✅ Technology infrastructure ✅ Cybersecurity ✅ Reliability ✅ Real-time processing capacity ✅ Banks & fintech infrastructure Someone has to fund that infrastructure. The bigger vision is: UPI → INDIA STACK → ULI → GLOBAL DIGITAL PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE This isn't merely about making a payment. India is building digital infrastructure that can transform how the world moves money and delivers financial services. And yes, that creates disruption for established global payment networks. Visa and Mastercard will face increasing competition from India's low-cost, interoperable digital payment ecosystem. 🇮🇳 FRIENDS, DON'T LET POLITICAL NOISE CONFUSE THE ISSUE. There are political parties and commentators raising concerns about UPI and MDR. Some claims circulating publicly can create fear about customers suddenly being charged for UPI transactions. Check the actual numbers. Check the policy. Check who actually pays the MDR. Don't believe every political narrative blindly — whether it comes from the government, opposition or social media. The long-term objective is straightforward: Build world-class digital infrastructure. Keep digital payments affordable. Expand financial inclusion. Reduce unnecessary transaction costs.
