It is happening! Today students will share their #PYPX projects with the community! They are so excited to have conversations about how they picked their topics, what they learned, how they took action, and how they grew as learners!
#PYPX this week has been a whirlwind of research, deep thoughts, and teamwork. Students have been exploring the pros and cons of using primary sources including interviews, surveys, focus groups etc. They also wrote their first drafts of their lines of inquiry! Check them out!
Our #PYPX homeroom has been using the Peel the Fruit thinking routine to synthesize our ideas about our topics and think deeply about the core of our issues!
During the last few #PYPX sessions, students continued to research and thought deeply about the Approaches to Learning they want to focus on in the coming weeks. As I left school today I admired the paintings the kids created about their topics in their art block! Check them out!
Yesterday our #PYPX homeroom discussed mentors, helped each other edit and revise our learning goals, and continued to work on research. We are so thankful to have a huge cohort of incredible mentors to support our groups! The kids can't wait to meet with them!
Today I heard a kid in my #PYPX homeroom say "We are basically teachers now!" She isn't wrong! Groups started writing their own learning goals and success criteria for the PYPX journey. They'll refine these as we continue over next couple of months. Check out their ideas so far!
Our #PYPX homeroom was one huge research party yesterday, and I’m glad someone captured this quick video of my classroom! Due to county testing, 5th grade had to do some creative reshuffling of kids. In all honestly, it was a thrill to have 40ish kids gather and help each other!
Our #PYPX homeroom reunited today, and the way the groups greeted each other would make you think spring break had been a month! We discussed different ways people take action and let that conversation our drive research as students asked “what have others done to make change?”
In today’s #PYPX session we did some slow looking at our notetaking tool and discussed its parts, purposes, and complexities. Then students set two types of goals for their return from break: a research goal and a collaboration goal. These will be super helpful after a week off!
Today’s #PYPX goal was to build a strong foundation for research! Groups created NoodleTools projects to manage their citations and notes, and used articles about their topics to brainstorm key words that will help them find more sources later! Can you guess these groups’ topics?
Today our #PYPX homerooms shared makerspace creations and began listing wonderings about our topics! In our closing circle, students celebrated their communication skills with lots of shoutouts. It is exciting to see these kids come together as collaborators and thought partners!
Today for PYPX we focused on two of my favorite things: organization and creativity! @ProfeDowning helped all the 5th graders organize our digital PYPX materials on google drive, and later groups worked together to make creations that represent their topics!
Today we kicked off our Who We Are unit, which is PYPX! Our PYPX homeroom got to know each other and wrote essential agreements for our class and for our small groups. We can’t wait to see where this journey takes us!
Well, that was amazing! Thank you Hena Khan for speaking to our community about your writing process and representation in books, and thank you to my hype crew of students for helping me practice talking to a role model without fainting. What a night! @henakhanbooks @BESbulldogs
I’m gearing up for the last day of #wissit22 and reflecting on all the thoughts and takeaways from the week so far. Seems like a great time for a thread (a metaphorical tread and a Twitter thread😁). Here we go!
Wissit day 4 in a nutshell:
-Thought about fostering a culture of thinking with adults
-Had a deep chat with learning group E and Jim, where I was the world’s most obnoxious interviewer and kept asking “but what are our weaknesses?!” (Thanks for being a good sport!)
-BUTTONS!
Last but not least, on #wissit day 5 I cried big fat tears as @mbdillane told everyone a story about our school, our kids, and ourselves. I love the idea of fragile hope, and I think if we all have it and grow it together, it becomes a bit less fragile and a bit more hopeful.🤍💙
I’m so incredibly grateful to @eroteaches and @mbdillane for welcoming my students at BES open house today! I wish I could be there myself, but I know my kids and their families will be in amazing hands! We’re kicking off the year with flexibility, teamwork, and love. Let’s go!
