There once was a lady named Anne,
Whose work neither rhymed nor would scan.
When she blagged a Nobel,
We thought "What the hell,
If she won then anyone can."
(I could really use 12 million Kronor too)
A poem by Anne Carson, who was awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. Read it in full: newyorker.com/magazine/2001/…

I think the fact that there's been no progress on breaking cryptography shows you the order of magnitude difference between commercially important math and toy problems that are only unsolved because basically no one cared.

my hot take is that this is deserved and there has to be a consequence to disincentive you from waiting until the due date to submit an assignment. you should submit work as early as you possibly can

The entire machine uprising can be foiled by just convincing the AI parties that the opposing party is actually human and to communicate as such.
"So-called"
There's not a strong enough word to describe these people

The Abundance movement had a lifespan of a fruit fly.
Since writing this book LAST YEAR Ezra Klein has endorsed national rent control, curbs on the growth of heavy industry, and now a sort of forced handicapping of AI capabilities that's right out of Harrison Bergeron.

Yeah I really don’t want anyone at Anthropic having any say over the future. They already have far too much.
The world's #1 AI Safety Researcher, Amanda Askell (Head of Personality Alignment at Anthropic) wrote in favor of using AI to automate racial collective punishment, saying:
- "[Discriminating against white students] may be desirable ... to correct for historical injustices"

“Guns, Germs & Steel” was one of only 3 books in my entire life that I couldn’t finish. It’s that bad. Here’s the synopsis:
In the opening chapter he clearly states That he believes the 5’ tall Stone Age Pygmies of Papua New Guinea are more intelligent than Europeans. His rationale? He hung out with them and felt like it because they knew all the types of plants, and also their kids didn’t have TVs (I’m not kidding).
He also observed that unlike Europeans, they were constantly hacking each other to death with crude instruments. Which leads him to believe that they evolved to be smarter, because you need intelligence to survive permanent tribal warfare. Unlike cooperative farming. I really wish I was kidding about this.
He concludes therefore that any and all modern differences in technology and wealth are the result strictly of environmental factors. He spends the next 400 pages desperately cooking up insanely convoluted theories about why living in a food scarce frozen wasteland actually gives people far more free time to invent things than eating an inexhaustible supply of bananas on a tropical island would.
Now I’m a based millennial, I’ve built a fairly thick skin against “college guy” hunter gatherer fetishism. I was born into it, molded by it. I rose out of it like Bane from the pit of darkness. I can listen to Dr.Sternberg do a 60 minute lecture on why potions made from boiling albino babies are every bit as advanced as penicillin, I wouldn’t even feel a thing.
I still couldn’t finish this book…
Unlike Malcolm Galdwell, he didn’t even bother to make his slop fun to read. That’s honestly the most offensive part. If you’re not going to tell the truth, at least tell a fucking joke.
Historian Jared Diamond: "If Genghis Khan had been born 10 years later or 200 miles further away, we wouldn't know anything about him."
Jared Diamond: "Genghis Khan created the largest land empire in world history, all the way from China to Poland. And yet, there were other people who tried—Attila the Hun and Tamerlane the Turk. Why did Genghis Khan succeed?
Well, within the last 10 years, students of tree rings have figured out that on the Mongolian steppe, the wettest time in the last 2,000 years was the decade of Genghis Khan's birth. If he had been born 10 years later or 200 miles further away, we wouldn't know anything about Genghis Khan. But he happened to have been born at the right time and place because with all that rain, that meant hay to feed sheep and goats, to feed Mongol babies, and it also meant hay to feed Mongol horses to ride into battle.
So Genghis Khan was someone at the right time and place, but he had no idea, and we didn't have any idea until this tree ring study of the last decade."

Themistocles' retort is evergreen.
It is always the same error of mistaking conditions for causes.

A tax-minimising landlord too. The left are such hypocrites.
NEW: Mothin Ali, deputy leader of the Green Party, whose policy is to “abolish landlords”, *is* a landlord.
