Massive congrats to my friend @IsabellaMWeber for her excellent new book out in the UK this week. We need it today more than ever. As many of us have been arguing, a different economy is possible—-but it must be fought for. Also great review in the @guardian today: theguardian.com/business/202…

Penguin has moved up the publication date of my new book with Patchen Barss called "Smarter Than Us". The book explains how AI works for a non-technical reader and then talks about the myriad risks and what to do about them.

Every human being has equal value. Every single one.
At the United Nations General Assembly, I challenged a world that still decides whose lives deserve protection and whose suffering can be ignored.
No race is superior. No people are disposable. Until we honour that truth, "everywhere is war" remains a warning we have failed to heed.
What the world needs now is love, with the courage to confront injustice and defend our shared humanity.
Love and a little kindness. For everyone.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗔: the largest African language model ever trained from scratch, at 1.5 billion parameters. Not a fine tune, this was trained from the ground up for Africa. 🌍
Trained on 12 African languages, it beats models from Google, Meta, Alibaba and HuggingFace on African language modelling and translation while being up to 8x smaller.
𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗔 doesn't belong to us. The weights are open and free to use commercially, so researchers can build on a base that doesn't treat African languages as an afterthought.
Weights in the comments.
Thanks to @UNDP, @AIHub4SD and CINECA for the GPUs and the support. None of this happens without them.

Ahead of the UN General Assembly in New York next week, I joined more than 1,500 academics and economists from 100+ countries in calling on global leaders to create an International Panel on Inequality (IPI), modelled on the IPCC, as recommended last year by the G20 Committee on Inequality led by @JosephEStiglitz.
On September 23, South Africa, Brazil, Norway, and Spain will convene, together with the UN Secretary-General and heads of state and government, to discuss the creation of the IPI.
The World Inequality Lab is actively supporting this initiative, which aligns with and can build on the work we have been doing for more than a decade.
Inequality is a political choice. It is shaped by the policies, institutions, and governance systems we build. In an increasingly chaotic world, establishing the facts and cooperating across borders remain our best tools for tackling it.
Please share.

"If we want to oppose this new fascist strain, we really have to get a move on. 'I don’t tend to use this language, I try to be measured, but I think I’ve earned the right to escalate,' she says. 'The moment we’re in, people are really mad and however mad you are, it’s not enough.
Because there is something so profound about no longer believing in the future, about seeing no value in our shared home, in the natural world. They’re traitors to creation.' theguardian.com/books/2026/s…

While US universities have put out studies that the US is no longer a democracy, poll after poll after poll in China finds that Chinese citizens find their government very democratic.
It's just not accurate to call China "authoritarian" when police in the USA kill 3 people a day on average, and the police in China generally don't even have guns.
Moreover, China has half as many prisoners as the USA, while China has 4 times the population.
AND, one is 13 times less likely to be the victim of a homicide.
I'm SICK of hearing Western media and academics malign China when they should be trying to learn from China's successes. It's biased; it's ignorant; and it's racist.
These are the facts, and facts matter.
