AI makes it really easy to find the SEC bias. We’ve barely started conference play, so schedules have not been that different.
Look how many undefeated and 1-loss teams are ranked and not ranked by conference 🤦♂️
The Protect College Sports Act (PCSA) is a laudable attempt to bring sanity back to college sports.
The key for success is enforcement.
Under pre NIL, many of the prominent teams routinely paid players under the table. Fix enforcement if you want a level playing field.
After watching the Reds get creamed by the Dodgers yesterday afternoon, we drove 3 hours to Toledo to watch the Louisville Bats lose 5-1 to the Toledo Mud Hens. Then 3 hours back. Nothing in that game persuaded me that the Reds are in good shape.
I have an extra ticket to the Reds game tonight in club seats (free food). If you want it email me at [email protected].
When my mom was in her 80s, she lived with us. We were almost always late to church and one day when I verbalized it, she told me, “at least we are early for the closing prayer”. We all laughed and I never worried about it after that.
More of this…
A barista at the coffee shop I've gone to every day for two years said something she'd apparently been waiting to say.
Her: Can I tell you something?
Me: Sure.
Her: You came in the week we opened.
Me: I know. I live close.
Her: You were the third customer ever.
Me: I didn't realize.
Her: You said the coffee was good.
Me: It was.
Her: We almost closed six months in.
Me: I didn't know that.
Her: We were losing money and my business partner wanted out and I had one week to decide if I was finishing this alone.
Me: What made you stay?
Her: Regulars like you.
Me: I just bought coffee.
Her: Every single day. Even the week we ran out of oat milk and you had to have regular and you didn't complain once.
Me: I noticed you were stressed.
Her: You noticed.
Me: It seemed like a hard week.
Her: It was the hardest week.
Me: I just didn't want to add to it.
Her: You've never added to it. In two years.
Me: (pause)
Me: I just really like the coffee.
Her: I know.
She handed me my order.
On the cup instead of my name it said "third customer. still our favorite."
I've kept that cup.
Sometimes just showing up quietly and not complaining during someone's hard week is the exact thing that helps them survive it.
When Kalani Sitake got hired at BYU and told us he would coach with love, not fear, I was skeptical. Few if any big time coaches did that. Urban made a career out of coaching with fear and hate. But over 11 years Kalani has shown that love does work and it creates a strong bond
Urban Meyer admits he used love, fear and hate as motivators to help him push people toward greatness, and the fear that powered his own career eventually broke down his body:
“The strongest forms of motivation are love, fear and hate. Only one is sustainable.”
“Fear and hate are powerful motivators. Powerful. Have I used those? Oh, hell yeah.”
“‘I’m going to pull your scholarship. You’re too soft. You can’t do this.’ I would try to motivate that person toward greatness.”
“Is fear and hate a great motivator? It’s about as good as it gets.”
“But it’s not sustainable.”
“Love is the only sustainable motivator.”
When asked whether he is motivated more by love or fear today:
“I think fear. I hate to say that. I wish I could control it, but there’s still a piece of me.”
“Fear of failure. Fear of letting people down. That drove me in my career.”
“It’s probably why I had the shelf life. Some coaches are coaching until they’re 75 years old. I could never have done that.”
“My body couldn’t take it.”

This idea that the SEC is so good that it needs to form its own league and crown its own champion is hilarious considering it already DOES crown a champion, who, if the SEC was so good, would surely dominate in the CFP against contenders from all those other conferences. But in reality the last 3 SEC champions have won ZERO playoff games 😭
Pot calling kettle black. But I don’t see the Big 10 pouting like the SEC. Respect.

Pioneer Day Fireworks Show on Utah Lake!
What a whirlwind it's been to get here. On July 6th, Lehi City Councilwoman Lockhart and Representative Gricius called me with the idea. I said, "Let's go for it," not realizing the Herculean effort it would take to make it happen.
Just 11 days later, we're all set for the first ever fireworks show on Utah Lake, coming up on July 24th at 10pm.
This event, designed to bring our community together, has required incredible collaboration from countless partners behind the scenes, including the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands (FFSL), the Utah Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Utah Lake Authority, the Utah County Sheriff's Office, local cities, state leaders and many others. I can't stress enough how many people and organizations had to say, "We'll get it done," to make this event a reality. The level of collaboration, urgency and willingness to step up has been incredible
Our business community also stepped up in a big way to make this show possible. A huge thank you to our title sponsors, QTS and Utah City, along with all of the other businesses and people that contributed to make it happen.
See you at the lake!

Utah County is the place to be on July 24th for a fireworks show over Utah Lake. Congrats to those who put it together and to the sponsors. It’s going to be awesome.

Make it make sense. Anyone? Anyone?
Vanderbilt plays an FCS team, Conference USA team, middle of the pack ACC team, six SEC teams who had a record .500 or worse in conference last year, and three good SEC teams.
Strength of Schedule according to ESPN: 18
BYU plays an FCS team, Pac 12 team, Notre Dame, only THREE teams who had a record below .500 in Big 12 play, and four good Big 12 teams.
Strength of Schedule according to ESPN: 55
Baylor plays an FCS team, Conference USA team, middle of the pack SEC team, but gets only three Big 12 teams who had a record .500 or worse, and six teams with winning records, including four who finished ranked.
Strength of schedule according to ESPN: 42
Make it make sense!?
When Kalani was hired, he spoke at my Rotary Club and talked about a culture of love at a time when most broke players down and then built them up with fear.
I asked him how could he succeed with such an approach. He said he followed Jesus and 11 years later he was right.
Great interview of Kalani Sitake by Andy/Ari On3 podcast.
BYU is VERY fortunate to have retained him as the PERFECT program/culture builder and ambassador.

It would be the honor of our lifetimes to have LeBron lead the Jazz. It would be a detour from the rebuild, but IMHO well worth doing.
Have Utah Jazz governor @DwyaneWade & @KingJames talked about potentially joining the Utah Jazz?
It's honestly the perfect roster and best front office situation for the 42-yr-old's current skill set and needs.
It is a roster full of really good off-ball players in their prime (Markkanen, Jaren Jackson), younger off-ball players (Keyonte George, Ace Bailey, Cody Williams), an awesome rookie to mentor (Darryn Peterson), plus a good vet in Jusuf Nurkic, (and maybe a best buddy in Kevin Love if he re-signs). The Jazz roster really is just missing a vet leader that knows how to win at the highest level + a player that can play-make & pass at a high level. Plus the chance to mentor Darryn Peterson.
A situation to make a good a relationship with businessman @RyanQualtrics who keeps looking for business partners like DWade for team ownership in the Jazz, the Mammoth, future sports teams, etc. Seems like the obvious choice @RichPaul4!
The Utah Jazz are ready to take that next step into serious contention, and LeBron James could be a huge part of that.
Honestly, if the Jazz were located in Florida or California, LeBron would be a Jazzman already. But guess what? Salt Lake City not that far from Los Angeles and is just a short helicopter ride to Las Vegas (1 hour). Plus Utah has some amazing golf courses frequently visited by people like Michael Jordan. DWade and LeBron could golf all the time together. Etc etc.
