What kind of childhood makes a top scientist? Is it enough to have all the right traits (brilliance, grit, etc) or do you need the right family too?
And why should we care? A 🧵 on our paper on the Nobel Laureates.
A teaser: the income distribution of the laureates' fathers.1/N

GALAH DR4 is now public! 10 years of observations, 995 nights (incl. rainy/snowy/cloudy ones), 32 elements (incl. nitrogen), 0.92 Mio. stars, 1.09 Mio. spectra, thanks to an amazing group of observers, engineers, and astronomers. Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2409.19858 with links to data.

Hi @Coles I’m Dr Kit, native bee expert. My PhD research was on #beehotels, and I have published numerous articles both in journals and for the public, including being featured on Gardening Australia. These are terribly designed. 1/

Happy to announce the publication of Gliese 12 b, an Earth-sized, temperate planet only 40 lightyears away! This is an excellent target for future studies to examine the atmospheres of temperate, rocky planets.

Dr @spacejayk's love for space and his childhood curiosity for the stars has led him to shape the future of science outreach for Aussie children at @questacon.
Now, he's been named our 2023 Young Alumnus of the Year!

A recent insightful comment by @MerlinCrossley highlights the magic of in-person #conferences, making many valid points about the value of in-person interaction (campusmorningmail.com.au/new…) --> Based on @futuremeetings work, here is a (not super) brief Twitter thread response 🧵

🔵 Because the black hole is about 27 000 light-years away from Earth, it appears to us to have about the same size in the sky as a doughnut on the Moon. Squint to see the 🍩 in this video 🎥 ESO/M. Kornmesser/L. Calçada

just a regular reminder to grad students that you can make $1000 per 1,000 word science article. as far as side gigs that pay the bills and actually make you a better scientist there isn’t a much better deal.

#JWST isn't here and we already detected 19 chemical species in 35 different exoplanet atmospheres !
This table is one of my contribution to our PPVII chapter on giant (exo)-planets led by Tristan Guillot (arxiv.org/abs/2205.04100).

All edits are complete and our textbook is officially at the printer! I'm new to the world of book publishing, but gosh was that a lot of work over the last 9 months...

Wish I could be at #Exo4 - but if you’re there, be sure to meet brilliant new UQ student @AstroShashank and see his poster extending @rodluger’s starry code to oblate stars!

I chose to dedicate the book to my 6 wonderful siblings over a year ago, but wanted to inform them by gifting them a copy each.
This past weekend I drove 700 km to see all of my siblings, and share the news, and it was so good for the soul ❤️ I’ve missed them terribly

What kind of core does Jupiter have?
In this new paper, we argue that an anomaly in Juno's gravity data can be interpreted as a tidal resonance of Io's orbital motion with one of Jupiter's core normal modes. Our proposal implies that Jupiter has a rather extended dilute core!

I will be giving a free astronomy class for kids this Thursday from 5:45 - 6:30pm on zoom. Recommended ages (7-10), but all are welcome!
The topic this Thursday is the recently launched JWST space telescope and the wonders we hope it will uncover.
