And that's GeoDuels today.
Amazing community, tons of features (not vibecoded btw)
And most importantly, it's still 100% free.
I built it because I wanted a free GeoGuessr, just like you.
If that sounds like your kind of game, give it a try ❤️

Or could I?
Browsers don't let you hide Google's stuff, but extensions do.
So I literally made an extension with one job: hide street names.
And added two ranked modes:
- Moving with street names (for everyone)
- No Move without street names (with the extension)
ez $$$ saved
Custom maps were added next - the most requested thing apart from hiding street names.
Then came:
- Parties and friends
- NMPZ mode
- Cheater detection systems
- Achievements
- Even team-based duel modes!
But one thing remained: I still couldn't hide street names for free.
Players flooded the site and Discord. With 1,000 Discord members, GeoDuels finally had a community that could sustain itself.
The biggest problem was solved: players now had people to play against.
So I kept building, improving GeoDuels with every update.
Unfortunately, the Reddit hype didn't last. Most players tried GeoDuels once, then forgot about it. Player counts dropped, and matches became harder to find.
I needed something bigger to build a lasting community.
So I made a YouTube video about GeoDuels.
It BLEW UP. AGAIN.
Street names. Removing them required paid maps — the very reason GeoGuessr had a paywall in the first place.
Some players hated it. But casual players didn't mind, and many kept coming back.
Still, I knew it was something I had to fix... something I did eventually fix 👀
I built the whole thing in just one month. Then I posted it on official GeoGuessr Reddit. It BLEW UP.
But everyone had the same question: How was it free?
I used so called "Embed Maps" by Google. Official, yet free.
There was just one catch...
1 year ago, I wanted to play GeoGuessr. But it was behind a paywall, and I was too cheap to pay.
So I thought, screw it. I'll make my own.
Today, GeoDuels has 23k players, hundreds of maps, and even tournaments.
And it's still 100% free.
Here's how it all happened 🧵
