Thrilled to have contributed my first piece to @SciDevNet on malnutrition. Food taboos are a major cause of pregnant women avoiding vital nutrients. Cultural beliefs on food should balance individual health needs. #ethiopia #health #nutrition #Africa bit.ly/3oNEGmk

#FridayGratitude: Amplification Solomon Yimer writes a compelling article for @SciDevNet that needs amplification! It is a weekend must-read. 🔗: scidev.net/global/news/food-… I was humbled to share my viewpoint because I am exposed to food taboos daily. I, too, practice some of them and I have seen their negative impact on nutrition outcomes, especially for women and children. For sure, at some point in time, some #FoodTaboos that aimed to prevent negative health outcomes could have been beneficial for individuals and communities. The issue is that not all food taboos that were purported to have health benefits then are based on current scientific evidence, and some may even be harmful. In my line of work, I approach food taboos from a point of gratitude for indigenous knowledge and culture; then with curiosity to evaluate them based on their potential benefits and risks. Do you practice any food taboos? I would love to know! Do Tell. Happy weekend friends. #Culture | #Africa | #Malnutrition | #Health
