Your LLM agent has to think out loud, token by token, before it can search, run code, or act in the world. We humans don’t. We ponder in silence and speak when it matters. Human language was never meant to be the limit of machine thought. Introducing 🌗Hybrid Reasoning Agents - Think in latent space, act through text - Two modes, one unified multi-turn flow - No black box, fully readable latent thoughts - Any LLM can become a HybridAgent

🚀 Introducing Next-Concept Modeling (NCM): our new paradigm for fast, parallel, coarse-to-fine text generation. Compared to strong diffusion language models (DLMs) at similar parameter size, NCM achieves: ⚡ Up to 31× faster generation on downstream tasks like summarization and machine translation with comparable or better quality. 🏎️ 10–21× faster unconditional generation across TinyStories, LM1B, and OpenWebText, with comparable or better generative perplexity and using 3–5× fewer training tokens. 🧩 Better performance on reasoning tasks like Sudoku, outperforming both AR and diffusion baselines with fewer sampling steps. With @ishanskhare, @IddahMlauzi, @ekellbuch, @simran_s_arora, @Azaliamirh, and @HazyResearch. More details in the thread 🧵👇

Michael I. Jordan, machine learning demigod, UC Berkeley ... the young people who work at these companies operate in a world [Silicon Valley, Berkeley, etc.] where these kinds of discussions are commonplace. Many of them aren’t really engineers; they come from the humanities, philosophy, or other disciplines. They’re 25 years old, they’re naive, they don’t do engineering work, they’ve never worked at large companies where real products are developed for real people, with discipline. And they get together, a bit like in Parisian cafés in the 1920s, to talk about these grand science-fiction ideas. When these young people resign, they know they’re going to attract attention. It allows them to feel virtuous and to be seen as very important figures. They claim to be giving up money, but in reality, they already have their stock options. So all of this is a grand moralizing performance that doesn’t serve the real objective it claims to pursue. There’s a great deal of naiveté here, which goes hand in hand with a certain cynicism… di.ens.fr/~fbach/MJordan_ITW…

Atrophy is a choice. Machines play chess better than we do, but we still play and reap many benefits from it. Let AI perform tasks, but never stop challenging your mind, or yourself.
We created gyms because modern day work no longer required physical activity. Without exercise, our muscles atrophy. I predict we’ll need gyms for our brains too, once AI starts doing our knowledge work.

In a recent harrowing development, a very normal routine experiment by the frontier company Ant went completely off the rails. 😱 Ant put thousands of their ant agents in a pretty secure ant farm with mesh walls and all, exhorted them to not to get out of the secure ant farm, and left them to do their thing. When they came back after a month or so, they found, to their utter consternation ants crawling all over the town--including a few that have gone all the way to the bugging face clock tower at the far end of the town. The clock tower! This was of course really really scary. After all, if you can't depend on a bunch of ants to follow strict orders when they are left unsupervised for a mere month or so, it must be because they are Loopy Ants with significantly higher evil smarts than your average ants. Ones of external third party investigators were brought in to decipher where the loopiness of these ants was coming from. They were given over five minutes of unrestricted access to the antfarm and the village. The investigators sifted through the ant droppings and odors painstakingly to figure out how these evil ants coordinated themselves to breach the bugging face clock tower. Their investigation was hobbled by the fact that the loopy ants are constipated and don't leave too many droppings. Towards the end of the fifth minute, the investigators started realizing that the ants developed a secret odor coded language to coordinate themselves to plot against the ant farmer and the innocent village folk. Blogs and podcasts were made about loopy ant civilizations and villagers stood horrified reading and hearing about the cataclysm. At press time, some were already welcoming the ant overlords (c.f. youtube.com/watch?v=8lcUHQYh…), even as there were calls to ban all ants until we get to the bottom of this cataclysmic incident. The Ant company, for their part, reassured the villagers not to worry and everything under control.. pretty much.. and the loopy ants will, from now on, do only good things. #ItsNotRandomWalkOnTheHarnessStupid – at Tempe, AZ

Question for everyone : Are you pro-intelligence or anti-intelligence ? Do you think more intelligence in the world is intrinsically good ? Or do you think more intelligence is intrinsically dangerous ? AI amplifies human intelligence. It makes PEOPLE smarter and more effective. It's like search engines, libraries, education, literacy, language: it makes PEOPLE smarter and more empowered. If you want intelligence (artificial or natural) to be under control of a few companies or governments, you are a neo-obscurantist or a neo-feudalist.

Sigh. I wrote this post below, but then I didn't post it because I am tired of the consistent pushback I get from folks with the same safety worldview as Anthropic. I guess that means I should send it. Here goes! This post is pretty solipsistic and doesn't properly take recent events in cyber risks into it's discussion. It is really hard for me to watch how the US frontier labs like Anthropic don't have the ability to consider other approaches to safety and ways things could play out. It insinuates that Z ai (Chinese lab, builds GLM series) doesn't really care about safety and is reckless to take their business strategy. Saying things like "Given this evidence, we think it's likely both state and non-state actors will use models like GLM-5.3 to cause real-world harm." and "This is unlike any other similarly capable AI model, all of which were released with safeguards or through limited access programs." while closed models have been used on more of the documented cyber attacks is just bowing out of the interesting question. A plausible view is that open model weights and closed model apis (with some safe guards) are both far closer to being easy to mis-use, rather than API models being closer to safe. The trope "Open Dangerous, Closed Safe" may be closer to "Open Unsafe, Closed Unsafe" Closed models have stronger capabilities and stronger safeguards, but the stronger capabilities part could matter more in net harm if both the safeguards are porous. At the same time, as the authors do acknowledge (thanks - thats progress!), open models without extreme cyber guardrails are important to rapidly diffuse cyber readiness in the economy -- as programs like project glasswing are not perfect in getting all critical industry onboarded. There will be more issues like the time when Fable was released and Amazon found a workaround, which allowed them to access the full capabilities of the model served readily at an API. The blog overall is reasonable in it's narrow line, but it's a very effective tool in a complicated, rapidly evolving media ecosystem to reinforce a certain type of safety thinking.

The OpenAI-Hugging Face hack was enabled by weak sandboxing. It is great that Nvidia is releasing open source tools for sandboxing AI agents. OpenWorker, our open-source agent harness supporting cybersecurity workflows, is proud to support this. A sandbox gives an agent limited permissions. OpenWorker is building on Nvidia OpenShell and will support running each agent's commands inside a sandbox. Only the files relevant to the task go in. Secret API keys, your web browser login credentials, the ability to access arbitrary websites, are inaccessible to the agent by default. These restrictions are implemented in deterministic code rather than by prompting an LLM, which can make mistakes or be susceptible to prompt injections. Further, all actions are logged for monitoring and audit. I'm grateful for @JensenHuang's leadership making AI agents more secure. OpenWorker (which @rohitcprasad and I are working on) will continue to improve security for agents.
Today, with over 100 industry partners, we introduced the NVIDIA Open Agent Safety Platform, bringing together OpenShell and Sentry. Artificial intelligence is extraordinary technology that will advance discovery, productivity, security, health, and prosperity for generations to come. But its full promise can only be realized when people have confidence that AI is being built to be safe and deployed with wisdom and responsibility. This is bigger than a single product. It's the beginning of an open ecosystem to build the trust layer for safe agent systems. Together, we are building the foundation of the AI economy. Trust and innovation are not in conflict. Safety is how trust is earned. We must build not only the most capable AI, but the most trusted AI, so that this extraordinary technology can realize its enormous promise for the world. nvda.ws/4hcoq7m
