PHYSICAL BRENT HIT $127, HIGHEST SINCE JULY 2008 From our partners at Trade Alpha: physical Brent cargoes averaged $127 in the week to Oct 9, per EIA. The record weekly average was $141 in the week of Jul 4, 2008. Brent futures trade near $105. - OPEC+ meets Nov 1 - EIA inventory reports due Oct 21 and Oct 28
The energy crisis is out of control. Oil is now at levels not seen since the 2008 financial crisis. Iranian officials say they’ll try to push oil prices even higher to influence November’s midterms. Yet, after eight months of the Iran war, the stock market is near an all time high. What would it actually take to derail this market?

This aged well. 3 hours into the supposed "Black Monday" stock market crash and Nasdaq 100 futures are now up nearly +1%. The S&P 500 is set to add +$350 billion in market cap at the open again. As we stated 24 hours ago: Ignore the noise.
Calls for a "Black Monday" are spreading rapidly across social media right now. If history is any guide, this means the S&P 500 should hit 8,000 soon. Ignore the noise. Read our analysis below.

Some businesses will turn better models into sustainable revenue. Others may struggle to defend their margins as competitors gain access to similar capabilities. Infrastructure providers, application developers and established software companies will face very different economics. I remain interested in what AI can make possible, but I wouldn't assume every AI company is a good investment simply because the technology keeps advancing. More useful is where that progress creates lasting value.

Chart shows (at least) 4 things: 1) CN Oil purchases was correlated with Iranian export through Aug 2)very low Iranian export now 3) Oil on water heading for CN is at highest lvl since April 4) Ergo, CN is sourcing that oil elsewhere. Bullish oil price and crude Tanker rates.
Is this what "seeing the writing on the wall" looks like?

#DYK approximately 28 cents of every allocated dollar for water budgets went unspent by govts between 2009-2020. How can govts make better use of water funds so that water can be harnessed to create jobs, improve health & expand energy access? 👉 bit.ly/4qwXTVk

Food for thought! "Inflation and Price Dispersion: New Cross-Sectoral and International Evidence" by Santiago Alvarez-Blaser. "This paper investigates the relationship between price dispersion and inflation, shedding light on one major source of the cost of high inflation. By analyzing novel product-level web-scraped data from over 60,000 restaurants and supermarkets across 18 countries facing high and low inflation periods, I uncover new evidence of a significant positive correlation between inflation and price dispersion. My findings reveal that average annualized inflation, ranging between 0 and 20 percentage points across countries within a condensed time frame, is significantly associated with higher price dispersion in both the restaurant and the supermarket sectors. The estimates indicate that the marginal effect of suboptimal inflation on product-level distortions is positive, economically significant in all inflation environments and heterogeneous across sectors. Cross-sectionally, I find that as annualized inflation rises from 0% to 10% inefficient price dispersion is about 46% higher for supermarkets and 73% higher for restaurants. Lastly, the relationship between inflation and price dispersion does not flatten much at higher inflation, so that the marginal cost of additional inflation does not vanish as inflation rises – a pattern standard menu-cost models do not generate. This indicates a sustained impact of inflation on price dispersion, implying that accommodating higher inflation levels incurs substantial welfare costs." bde.es/wbe/es/publicaciones/…

We need to mine as much copper in the next 18 years as we have mined in the past 10,000 years, which is 700-800 million tonnes... and that's without the AI demand. Including AI demand, @BMO estimates we need ~35,000 tonnes of copper per gigawatt of installed data centre capacity... And according to S&P, by 2030, installed data centre capacity in the US is expected to reach 152 GW (~62 GW today).
The world is facing an unprecedented copper challenge. At Mining Forum Americas, Ivanhoe Mines Founder & Executive Co-Chairman Robert Friedland puts the scale of the challenge into perspective.

$NVDA $MU $SNDK $LITE I tend to agree. This feels like a coiled-spring moment, with last week of October earnings or potentially the midterms serving as the catalyst. We’ll find out whether all is well and GAI capex continues to grow, or whether hyperscalers and others signal future cuts. In one scenario, GAI stocks rip 25% higher; in the other, it’s a bloodbath, and everything gets gutted by 25%. At this point, my money is on the former. Until then, weak hands with no conviction either way will capitulate and get flushed.
