When we do not understand an abuser's capacity for deceit, we make it easy for the offender to continue in deception and, sadly, often call it “grace.” If it lacks truth, then it is not grace.

Important learning here for the CofE Redress Scheme "Reparations also may include nonfinancial support. Requests have included help for victims to write down their stories, organizing meetings with local church representatives or installing a plaque in memory of victims."

An important reminder
You cannot talk people out of suffering, trauma, or great grief. You must go to them, sit with them, listen, and understand; then, little by little, you can begin to walk with them toward a new and different place.

It is always the responsibility of the person with power to maintain the integrity of the relationship. Always.

I am totally with @GaryWaddington here. Here’s the thing. You can’t spend years telling parish clergy that accountability matters, then look surprised when people start asking the same questions of bishops. The resignation of the former Archbishop of Canterbury, the resignation of the Archbishop of Wales, and other bishops facing safeguarding consequences have changed the conversation forever. Trust isn’t rebuilt by another policy. It’s rebuilt when those with the greatest authority are the first to accept the greatest accountability. That’s how healthy organisations work. More importantly, it’s how the Gospel works. The greatest among you must be the servant of all. #GeneralSynod #Synod #ChurchOfEngland #Safeguarding #Leadership #Accountability #Trust #Culture #EpiscopalLeadership #ChristianLeadership @churchofengland @ArchbishopSarah @CottrellStephen
Ok, so there's quite a bit of stuff about a report before @synod (slated for Monday 13th July) on trust and trustworthiness - you can read the paper here: churchofengland.org/sites/de… Time from a thread of doom! tl;dr curates egg, exacerbates, doesn't solve, some bits 🤮. 🧵 1/

Such a helpful comment.. the demand to reconcile/forget before any real signs of repentance have been seen can be so damaging for those wronged.
True repentance means owning responsibility for the breakdown of trust and knowing that much time will pass before it can be renewed, if that is even possible.

We often seem to want people who have suffered terrible things to just “get over it.” They cannot. Evil has a real impact and does real damage.

Some have interpreted 'headship' in the bible in terms of authority and power. Others talk about 'source' and co-leading. Is it time for a rethink? An Ideas Exchange with @lyndonjost. Online and, as with all our events, completely free.
