Two years ago, the Kurdistan Region held elections and the KDP & the PUK still haven't formed a government.
At the time, I wrote for @CH_MENAP that a delay would "further damage the Kurdistan Region." I couldn't have imagined it would still be going on.

No comment yet from Iraqi government on that claim. Official readout of Monday’s meeting did not mention expulsion or extradition.

The Dutch government knows as well as anyone how empty this "milestone" is, given what was envisaged by Peshmerga reform. Western diplomats periodically make the mistake of praising the parties for "achievements" that are without real substance. It's extremely counterproductive.
Congratulations to @KRG_MOPE and @KurdistanRegion on the unification of the Peshmerga Forces.
A unified, professional, and non-partisan force protects all people in the Kurdistan Region and wider Iraq.
🇳🇱 is proud to have supported this crucial milestone.

Today, the KDP and the PUK, with the support of some EU member states, have forever justified the KDP & PUK authority over the Peshmerga forces & killed the unification of the Peshmerga.
What the KRG PM is selling to us as "Peshmerga unification" is only a ministerial decree so that the KDP and PUK Peshmerga will be fully paid by the Ministry of Peshmerga, and in the hope of the US extending its subsidies to the Peshmerga forces.
The KRG will now pay the KDP and the PUK militia forces & selling this to the public & intl community as a success story.
What the KDP and the PUK have agreed is that the KDP will have its own forces organized under "Zone 1" formerly it was called the 80 Divisions] and the PUK have its own forces organized under "Zone 2" [formerly it was called the 70 Divisions].
The Iraqi Prime Minister has congratuled the Kurdish people and the KRG for this unification. Partly, he most probably does sth similar to fool the intl community in bringing the militias under the control of the state.
The Peshmerga is more than a military force. It is a symbol of the struggle, sacrifice and identity of the people of Kurdistan.
Today is a historic day for Kurdistan and the Peshmerga; the process of unifying and reorganizing the Peshmerga forces has been successfully completed.
This unification is the first step of a long process, and the next phase is even more important. It must focus on strengthening military capabilities, providing advanced weapons and air defense systems, developing competencies, and comprehensively advancing the Peshmerga forces.

As an opposition political leader, and based on precise information from inside the forces, I state clearly:
The claims by the outgoing KRG government that the Peshmerga forces have been unified are not true.
What took place was largely a formal ceremony and a change in names and administrative arrangements. The forces have not been genuinely unified under one national command.
The forces in Sulaymaniyah remain affiliated with the PUK and operate through its chain of command, while the forces in Erbil and Duhok remain affiliated with the KDP and operate through its chain of command.
The 80 Forces have simply been renamed “Devari Yek”, while the 70 Forces have been renamed “Devari Doo.” Changing names does not mean that the forces have been unified.
A truly unified force requires one national command, one chain of authority, and loyalty to state institutions—not political parties.
What we have in the Kurdistan Region today are partisan, personal, and militia forces—not a unified national force.
