In our own research we used this corpus to study dark patterns and manipulative tactics that political candidates use to raise money. But we've just scratched the surface and we expect there are many other questions that the data can shed light on. xitter.cf/random_walker/status/1…
At Princeton CITP, we were concerned by media reports that political candidates use psychological tricks in their emails to get supporters to donate. So we collected 250,000 emails from 3,000 senders from the 2020 U.S. election cycle. Here’s what we found. electionemails2020.org/

The WA legislature is considering a consumer data privacy bill. By now, legislators know that our data is sold to unaffiliated third parties, which zero people would opt in to. They don't seem to care.
So, I sent this to @RepDrewHansen's cmte:

Companies are paying to show us a lot of ads that we are not remotely interested in. One large fintech company paid to show me the same ad 2,081 times in a single month. See my blog here: adalytics.io/blog/how-many-r…

Hiding privacy settings behind a "learn more" link is blatantly deceptive. The wording suggests a link to a privacy policy instead of controls, and is designed to minimize people clicking on it. The fact that it's so common says a lot about the sorry state of consumer protection.

Data brokers have been getting back to me.
Weirdest thing so far: LexisNexis has my email from when I was 12. I stopped using it then, and clearly couldn't have consented to anything.
So, they've successfully tracked me for 20 years.
And.. they give me info that's not mine 👇

Think maybe it's not so bad if @ring tracks your doorbell usage or whatever? How about notifying *Facebook* when you use it or when it sees your phone go to sleep due to inactivity? You are the product, not the customer. It's outrageous.

Grindr and OKCupid shared location data with dozens of advertisers, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. To fix privacy on phones, first we need to rein in the rampant privacy abuses inherent to the system of real-time bidding, or RTB. eff.org/deeplinks/2020/01/gr…
