No one will. Persuasion is a myth - people still smoke.
So many people are going to get one-shotted by super persuasive super intelligences and I might be one of them

Bugün yoğun bakımdaki babaannemi ziyarete gittim. Oradayken Claude Opus 5.5 kullanarak hastabaşı monitörüne Doom portladım. Oyundaki can yüzdesini hastanın nabzına senkronize ettim; can 0’a düşerse nabız da sıfıra düşer. Bu da oyunu daha heyecanlı hale getiriyor.

all that, years and years building inevitably to the day when they got to say " we are the canary in the coalmine - what has happened to us will happen to others soon" and they fluff it at the last second and leave it out of the statement. historic ball-dropping
The Canary will be closed for the foreseeable future. As of today (Monday 19 October), the Canary will be closed indefinitely. After multiple attacks this year, from Lloyds debanking us to former employees spreading malicious lies on social media, the situation has become unsustainable, both financially and operationally. After 11 years, we take this action with deep sadness and regret. The extent of the lies, defamation, and harassment by ex-staff - coupled with the constant attacks by the state and those who’d see us destroyed - has become too much. However, it is not over. This week, we will publish what really happened at the Canary and push back against the vicious campaign against our team and us. We may be down, but we’re not out yet.

Everyone completely missing the point of why vibe coding is important. I don't need to make professional software at home, I can just make amateur, highly targeted software that successfully tells the computer to produce the outputs I want.

You might almost say it was giving the skilled access to wealth while depriving the wealthy of an opportunity to exploit skill - but I have been repeatedly assured by very clever ctrl-V philosophers that the reverse is true. #hmm

The irresolvable nonsense of copyright is a huge alignment problem. How do you explain to a robot that people can own a sentence? Might as well have it calculate the colour of love.
JUST IN: Claude allegedly chooses to sacrifice a “digital grandmother” in a trolley-problem simulation rather than violate copyright restrictions by reciting Justin Bieber lyrics.

Last night I was struck — really, almost radicalized — watching in real time as experts at the heights of their careers boosted emotionally satisfying narratives that were pretty much entirely wrong.

That's an extremely misleading narrative that is unfortunately extremely viral right now, and it sucks to see so many pro-Ukraine accounts spreading disinformation and pretending it's ok just because it's an anti-Russia/pro-Ukraine narrative. If you want to defend democracy, you have to be willing to reject disinformation even when it's telling a story that you want to hear.
Who knew Ukraine's defenders could even debotify the internet? Well, I guess we did 😌

The reaction to the Yandex strikes is starting to look rather bot-like itself. The same claim about Russian propaganda accounts going silent, repeated over and over. Where are the accounts, the posting data, the attribution? Instead, the same Cloudflare graph of automated web requests gets passed around as proof. People seem so pleased with the conclusion that they’ve stopped asking how anyone reached it. That willingness to repeat a story because we want it to be true is what bothers me.
Crawlers are a normal part of the web. Yandex runs a search engine; of course it generates bot traffic. Bot traffic from Russia does not automatically mean Russian propaganda bots. Yet people here, including journalists, keep treating the two as interchangeable. That Cloudflare chart shows automated web requests from Yandex’s network. Where’s the data showing that propaganda accounts stopped posting? Journalists in particular need to understand this distinction. Precision matters when a misread traffic graph becomes the basis for a political narrative.

A lot of centre aligned sensible journalists who mock simplistic conspiracism and lefty false consciousness narratives on here tonight subscribing to a simplistic conspiracy theory of false consciousness...

Russian influence activity is real, both online and offline. I’ve done a fair amount of reporting and editing on this topic. But it’s also the case that viral claims about “Russian bots,” especially when they’re meaty and satisfying, are typically massively overblown, if not downright fake. That Cloudfare chart going around, claiming that Ukrainian strikes on Russian data centers have drastically affected “Russian bot” activity, basically does not indicate anything like that (see next tweet). I’m also really skeptical about that other chart showing “AfD activity” plummeting for the same reason. I have no idea what its really purporting to measure and haven’t found a source. Maybe we’ll find out it’s legit! That would be a super damning and important finding! But precisely for that reason, we should be skeptical and cautious about these bold claims.

The data just shows a temporary drop in automated requests — meaning the Yandex crawler, which is among the largest in the world, and routine commercial traffic — not social media bots. I would be surprised if there was any effect on pro-Kremlin activity on social media because the Russian bot farms use Western access points and their messages are spread by real Western useful idiots.
BREAKING: Ukraine just hit another Yandex data center inside Russia, and Cloudflare data shows automated traffic coming from Yandex’s network has collapsed to roughly 0.4% of its recent peak. The amount of Russian bots on social media is truly insane.

There is a difference between “coordinated inauthentic activity” on social media and “web crawlers.” The former are what people talk about when they are talking about “reply bots” and state-run “disinformation campaigns.” All major platforms have various prohibitions on such campaigns, and coordinated activity (including this garbage platform.) In general, it is difficult and costly to maintain automated social media accounts that bypass detection mechanisms used by platforms to curb such activity. Instead, such campaigns tend to rely on real humans, as they are cheaper, more varied in their response, and won’t get shut down by ToS violations. They also have to use VPNs or similar IP masquerading in order to avoid country-level blockages. Many platforms like X are not available in Russia, either, adding another technical hurdle for freelance actors. So other countries with low labor costs (India, Philippines, Indonesia, for example) may be employed instead. There is often no practical way to identify this traffic as inauthentic, until perhaps a major campaign pattern emerges, at which point it risks being shut down. Web crawlers, by contrast, are permitted activity and are used by major internet search providers such as Google and Yandex to “spider” the web and identify new web links and changes to sites. So that content providers know what this traffic is, they label themselves as “bots.” This is valid traffic. When you see a graph showing a sharp decline in “bot” traffic, it is indicating a change in this valid web crawling traffic. There is no one keeping graphs of “coordinated inauthentic activity” social media traffic; indeed if it was identifiable and graphable like this, it would already be shut down. So, blowing up data centers in Russia could conceivably hamper coordinated social media campaigns, if for some reason they had a dependency on services hosted there. But given the constraints on such campaigns, they are likely to be run from elsewhere. What has been disrupted, probably, is Yandex web crawler traffic. If one wishes, for optics, to honor the unilateral imposition of a “energy ceasefire,” blowing up datacenters is a good tactic and should be maximized. Blow them all up. But don’t pretend this has any meaningful impact on coordinated inauthentic social media activity. It does not, and is a different problem entirely. Pretending otherwise feeds magical thinking, incorrect ideas about how technology works, and reduces pressure on the adversary by claiming imaginary gains. Keep pressure up, and report gains clearly and correctly. If you want to go after social media campaigns, track them down, monitor their activity, and source their origins. Same as it ever was. Taking out datacenters is a nearly completely unrelated concern.

According to Cloudflare Data Explorer the amount of russian bot traffic has dropped to 49% after Ukraine struck a yandex data center. Could this disrupt the midterm elections in the US?

A collapse in search indexing and acraping traffic resulting from an attack on Yandex does not mean the troll farms are down and all the evidence that they are is made up nonsense. Stop being this susceptible to having your biases flattered, it's embarrassing.

Tech people will never have taste because they didn’t spend their formative years discovering new bands, flipping through old magazines, watching obscure movies and reading books that weren’t required for English class. They don’t understand taste is cultivated over a lifetime.
