🆕 My first book (a @Cambridge_Uni Element) is now out open-access! Sovereign Heritage Crime: Security, Autocracy, & the Material Past offers a brief intro to a new theoretical framework on state-sponsored cultural erasure:

6 years ago today, on Oct 8, 2020, Azerbaijan bombarded Shushi’s Holy Savior Ghazanchetsots Cathedral twice, destroying a large portion of the roof. After conquest, the Aliyev regime beheaded the conical dome to "restore" the post-1920 pogrom appearance. I took this photo in 2014

William, a 9-year-old Armenian Christian boy, was pepper-sprayed by Israeli Jewish extremists while riding his bike in Jerusalem on Yom Kippur.
He was listening to music when the terrorists approached him menacingly and told him to remove his headphones.
They heard him speaking English, and one of them said "No English, Jews!", and attacked him.
You can hear his mother trying to comfort him, reassuring him that his little sister Arev is okay.

Three years ago today, 219 people were killed, 23 went missing, and hundreds were severely burned in the Stepanakert fuel depot explosion during our forced displacement. A tragedy born directly out of war and the scramble to survive.
🆘The hospital in Stepanakert #NagornoKarabakh is begging for immediate medical evacuation for the hundreds of victims of today’s explosion. No medical supplies, not enough doctors, no basic antibiotics for burn victims, due to Azerbaijan’s blockade.
Help!

The stuff Aliyev is allowed to get away with. Just unbelievable
URGENT: @bahruz_samad just attempted to cut himself in middle of the Supreme Court hearing. When the court went into a brief break, he was taken to drink some water. This is where he harmed himself. His right hand was bleeding, he continued to talk while bleeding.
He is clearly in a serious, dangerous mental condition. He needs urgent medical and psychological help. He must be released!

🇦🇲 Statement at the @UN Human Rights Council on Artsakh / #NagornoKarabakh
During the Human Rights Council 63rd Session, Dr. Joel Veldkamp, Director for Public Advocacy at Christian Solidarity International, delivered the following statement on the floor.
The statement is co-sponsored by @WEAnews and @ECLJ_Official.
Mister President,
This month marks three years since Azerbaijan conquered Nagorno Karabakh and emptied it of its entire Armenian Christian population.
To this day, Azerbaijan continues to block all 150,000 displaced Armenians from returning to their homes, in defiance of the International Court of Justice order of November 17, 2023.
Azerbaijan is also unlawfully holding 20 Armenians captive for political reasons, and continues to demolish Armenian heritage sites, most recently a medieval cemetery near Shushi.
We are deeply concerned by the fact that this month, a group of 150 diplomats took part in a tour of Nagorno Karabakh’s ethnically-cleansed cities, a tour in which Azerbaijani officials falsely presented medieval Armenian churches as belonging to another people group.
Peace in the South Caucasus cannot be built on ethnic cleansing, politically motivated unlawful detention, and cultural destruction.
We call on this Council to take meaningful measures to ensure the safe return of the Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh to their homeland, with guarantees for the full enjoyment of their human rights.
One practical way to do this would be by supporting the peace forum for Nagorno Karabakh mandated by the Swiss parliament.

I’ll be in New York on Monday to give a lecture at Columbia University’s Armenian Studies programme, focusing on the colophons of medieval Armenian manuscripts. If you are around NYC and free that evening, please feel free to drop by. It would be wonderful to see you there!

Very concerning rhetoric in Azerbaijan, with its former foreign minister threatening Armenia with an invasion—after the Armenian government gently challenged Azerbaijan’s mocking of Armenian history in ethnically cleansed Nagorno-Karabakh. Is the world order collapsing further?
