My friend and former Washington Post colleague @ishaantharoor has a piece in @NewYorker today that gets at something I've been trying to put into words all week: what happened this week isn't just a natural disaster story; it's a story about who pays for a crisis they didn't help create.
Ishaan traces how a catastrophic glacial collapse became a 500+ death toll, and threads it into everything else Nepal has been carrying in the past year: a Gen Z uprising, a new government trying to prove itself, and now a disaster that will likely set the country back a decade.
We spoke the other day about how my newsroom has been covering this and what this moment feels like from Nepal. Here's what I told him: a year ago the ground shook because of us -- our politics, our anger, our frustration. This week, it was the actual ground again. It’s as if Nepalis are having to alternate between the disasters we cause and the ones that just arrive.

Buku Epistemology: A Contemporary Introduction to the Theory of Knowledge, merupakan karya Robert Audi.
When new technologies reorganize modes of governance, political institutions can change faster than the forms of knowledge through which people are governed. The categories of governance, administrative practices, measures of development, and criteria of progress may remain the same on the surface, but the ways in which they are used by changing political institutions can raise difficult questions for a democracy: what should a new political order do with the structures it inherits from an old one?
As more public decisions depend on data infrastructures, digital identities, and algorithmic classifications, the question of what law, politics, and public discourse must do with inherited structures of knowledge is becoming more important. I’m curious about how others are thinking about this.

I’m delighted to be returning to Columbia University this fall as a Lecturer in Contemporary Civilization in the Core Curriculum.
This year, I’ll once be teaching the long and difficult conversation at the heart of CC: from Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, and Machiavelli to Hobbes, Rousseau, Kant, Marx, Nietzsche, Du Bois, Freud, Gandhi, Ambedkar, Arendt, Fanon, Foucault, and others. Across these texts, we will ask enduring questions about political authority and freedom, justice and inequality, empire and democracy, and what we owe to one another.
One of the great privileges of teaching in the Core is the opportunity to encounter these questions anew each year through sustained conversation with students. I’m very glad to be returning to the classroom, and to Columbia, for another year.

Got this beauty today, courtesy of Princeton UP.
I stand by my blurb 100%:
“For anyone, like me, who’s ever stared at a shelf of Chinese classics and thought, ‘Where do I even start?’ — start here. Bell makes China’s ancient debates feel alive, witty, and politically urgent.”
Great piece by Quinn Slobodian on what digital empires mean today, and how we should respond to them.
