I’m going to share with you all something I shared with someone on an advisory call this week: Stop rewarding the academic theater of PM best practices. I’m tired of folks thinking you put insights into a magical PM framework and a great business spits out the other end.

This Week in Rust: outraged @rustlang community armed with pitchforks led by ex-members with personal vendettas and YouTube ad dollars, using any opportunity to demonize project leadership while claiming moral high ground. Disgraceful.

Reminds me how we'd notice at work LAN parties how the game behavior matched work practice (slow & steady performers, struggling to learn, etc). We'd have interns and new hires join and it would very often match their future performance and working style.
The "g" in "general intelligence" stands for "gamer". You can measure general intelligence extremely well using video game performance. The correlation in a model that underestimates? 0.93.

At the time I also ran all technical interviews for the Engineering department at that startup but game performance was a better predictor than any interview exercise. Other top performers noticed and I used to joke that we should replace the interview process with a few games.

.@lufthansa after a serious mess from your end leading to 2000€ extra cost for me, your consumer support offered on April 6th 1424€ of compensation. I asked about the 600€ difference and since then have been ghosted by your services to get the proposed 1424€. Please address.

This type of statement is very common in the Rust community. Often in large refactorings when it compiles it just works. #rustlang

It goes against common wisdom, but sometimes it is the right thing to do. We look back on the decision with no regrets but a great feeling of accomplishment. I will soon blog an update on @rustlang at @krakenfx to shed more light. 🦀⚙️🐙
There are few projects more humbling than a multi-year migration. Eg breaking a monolith using one language to smaller services using another language/framework. These are both thankless projects, challenging, and risky if not done properly. And it rarely starts as multi-year…

RedPanda is pretty cool - if it were written in Rust it'd be even cooler. One cannot overstate the maintainability, reliability and general peace of mind provided by software written in #rustlang.
After 200 hours of testing against #ApacheKafka 3.2 on a 1GB/s workload, even with 2X as much hardware, redpanda can saturate the hardware with predictable tail latencies (70x lower latency - faster - is a result of focusing on predictability) redpanda.com/blog/redpanda-v…

Same story here - though it was expected
"We decided to move our entire codebase to Rust [..] what did we learn? We all expect performance and dev processes to improve. Those indeed happened. What we didn’t expect was the extent to which dev velocity increased and operational incidents decreased."

There are a lot of thorny issues around the OFAC/Treasury sanctioning of an open source project, and what it means for freedom of speech. To help figure those out, the EFF has agreed to represent me. eff.org/deeplinks/2022/08/co…

Imagine a full-remote company - it's great, but no coffee breaks, no lunch discussions and no afterwork. How do you get people to bond and move beyond work. Can the office be 'just work'? You probably need other dimensions to connect with - music, books, sports, games, etc.

We aim to build this healthy environment at Kraken - a cultural Nash equilibrium if you will. 99% love it and swear only by it, because it's fun, respectful, collaborative and kind. It's unassuming and positive. It's rejecting political distractions in favor of our mission.

We put our culture out there because we are proud of what we have. We're united behind the same mission and values. Internet, Free Software, cypherpunk values, and extreme ownership. Plus we build kick-ass systems in Rust with a super-smart team. blog.kraken.com/post/14372/k…
