Announcement: After a couple very successful Mentorship cohorts, Side by Side Collective will be taking an indefinite hiatus.
We hope this time away allows our team the opportunity to reflect and explore other ways of contributing to our community.
Our founder @alishakassam will be re-investing her time in projects that she hopes will have an equal or greater impact on professional women.

I spoke with an Engineer today and the convo nearly broke my heart. He's new to Canada. For the last 8 months he's been working two jobs as a Barista to make ends meet. He's Strong in JS, jQuery, PHP w/ exposure to React and Node.js. Twitter - Can we help him? (#RT for exposure)

So incredibly proud of this lady @MC_bosslady from @KiraSystems for moderating an amazing panel of speakers last night who came out to share their stories and insights on parental leave. Many thanks to all panelists and @sidexsideco for a great evening. 🙌🏻

@MC_bosslady is the best panel facilitator.
She’s funny, informative, vulnerable all while giving you actionable bits of advice + support.
This has been my first @sidexsideco event and I’ve had such a great experience.
On advice for parental leave:
“If you’re thinking of having kids, open an account and put some money in it every month. When your top-off runs out it can be super helpful.”
-@saryev – at Toronto, Ontario
“Understand yourself, understand your partner. Know what they’re going to contribute. Talk about the ugly.”
-Andrew Kim – at Toronto, Ontario
“Model the behaviour that you want to see in people. That would be my biggest takeaway.”
@Larissakholmes – at Toronto, Ontario
“Knowing that it’s ok for your CEO to pickup their kids from daycare, or to mark family events in your calendar, contributes to the kind of culture that is open for other folks to do the same.”

“Coming back from my first leave was a process. Something that was really important coming back was creating a sense of rigidity: I’m in at 8 and I’m out at 4 for daycare. That really helped when there were times that were really hard.”
