It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Coach Mike Sweetney, a cherished friend of the YU Macs program and MacsLive.
Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.
Rest in peace, Coach Mike. You will be deeply missed. BD”E
The world lost a giant today. I lost a close friend. The basketball world lost a beloved star. Our Jewish community lost an ally and someone who knew exactly how to show up.
Mike Sweetney wasn’t just a friend. He was family. When you needed him, he was there. Always. You didn’t even have to ask.
The very first message I got after October 7th, 2023 was from Mike checking if I was ok. He knew I was in Israel.
A couple of years later, when Iran attacked Israel with ballistic missiles, the first message I got was from Mike. He knew my son, Noah was there and wanted to make sure he was ok.
When we would run a charity event for troubled teens, Mike would show up.
He was there for our student-athletes at Yeshiva University day in and day out, regardless of his other responsibilities and jobs. His dedication to mental health awareness and his willingness to share his story for the benefit of others was the work of a selfless human being with a huge heart.
Mike - we love you and we will miss you. Thanks for everything.
If you would like to assist the family, please feel free to reach out directly and I will give instructions.

deGrom in 2018 had a 1.70 ERA, 269 strikeouts, a 0.91 WHIP across 217 innings. His reward was a 10-9 record and, thankfully, the NL Cy Young. Baseball nearly punished the best pitcher alive for his team's offense.

The Macs have been wearing orange warmup shirts to honor the Bibas family who were captured by Hamas and whose corpses were later returned to Israel. With genuine sensitivity, @Marteljr explained the significance of the orange shirts—though he unintentionally misstated two crucial details. Rather than deflect, he owned his mistakes completely, revealing the integrity that makes him a true mensch (in addition to an excellent announcer).
While this story centers on the @YUathletics Macs (and @elliotsteinmetz ‘s) powerful gesture to shine light on the Bibas family and all hostages still in captivity, this moment of accountability adds another layer of humanity to an already inspiring display of solidarity. In these challenging times, both courage and humility matter. I appreciate Ray’s correction, and I know many others do too. Thank you!
