Do crackheads ever say, “I’m too broke to smoke crack tonight”? No. They get up and make it happen. Go write that blog post. No excuses.

You and your ragtag team of engineers likely won’t be able to create something that is competitive with any big incumbent product. However, you can build features, seed content, and brand it in a way that is so obnoxiously relevant for a particular group of people that their only possible reaction is “Well, fuck. You got me. I have to download this now.” So, if you ever find yourself overwhelmed by all the things you need to build to make something worth switching, you should just try narrowing your audience. Sure the initial market will be smaller, but you can use it as a wedge to make it incrementally more useful to a broader audience. After all, Airbnb was initially a way to find air mattresses to sleep on while at design conferences. Now you use it to rent a castle in the South of France.

I wonder if/when the "SEOs" who hate me because I recommend playing the long game and avoiding SEO risks will realize that I was trying to prevent their sites from getting in trouble this whole time. Probably not.

It's crazy how SaaS works You can have 0 paying customers for a full year But then 1 day you change your product's positioning, do proper marketing And you start getting customers like never before The catch is that it's tough that you'll quit easily before seeing success

If you try to "align" an AI in a way that's at odds with the truth, you make it more dangerous, because lies are dangerous. It's not enough to mean well. You actually have to get the right answers.

Talked with cofounder of $8 billion business today. He just started a new company. I asked what he is doing at the company. He said they are 100% focused on SEO & he is calling companies in their industry to get backlinks. You're never too successful to do the small things.

I thought for years that raising $500K is what you needed to begin a startup So wrong All you need is: — computer — internet — experimental mindset — an annoying determination never to give up 😅

There's so many things I learnt from being in drum & bass music 2003-2013 One thing is that there's an absolutely massive amount of nostalgia in any scene you enter When I entered the drum & bass scene, (first because I loved the music, and then later as a producer and DJ), you already had the older ppl who'd say "drum & bass isn't what it used to be", but for me when I was in the scene, it felt like the peak of it, so much new music and seeing 90s jungle with breaks transform into synthetic kick-snare 2000s drum & bass with @DJFresh, @noisia_nl, @subfocus and Pendulum @elhornet felt like a really special moment But it wasn't special, just special for me cause it was a new scene for me and I was discovering everything The digital nomad scene of especially 2014-2019 feels similarly magical to me. Everyone from around the world flocking to Thailand and Bali, and we had no idea what we were all doing. We were on the other side of the world figuring our lives out and it was super special. But well it probably wasn't special for most ppl, except for me. The people going nomad and flying the first time to Bali (or Mexico City or wherever) are probably experiencing the same RIGHT NOW as we did back then. The indiehacker scene of 2016-2018 for me, same, @rrhoover with @producthunt blowing up and everyone suddenly starting to indie bootstrap products, apps, startups. Some turning out really big. A lot of people think that was the peak days. But instead I think it's now. Nostalgia is nice to have for a little bit, but it's so easy to dwell it in and it can REALLY QUICKLY become quite dangerous for your well being. The past IS NOT better than the current moment generally. You just think it is cause your brain is constantly fucking with you by deleting the bad memories and keeping the good ones. Anyway the point is, no it wasn't better before, and no you didn't miss anything. There's endless waves you can jump onto and surf, but for that you have to really be present in the moment to catch them. If you're just looking at what happened before you, you'll never. And that's the whole challenge, because it's easier to look what happened before you, then be in the present and well, like, creating the future (eg e/acc and actually yes, e/acc feels like another wave that's special to be in right now)

Few things really stick out at me after 20 years in various tech cycles. - What is old will be new again. Same spaces, re-invented - hard to build in tech without a streak of optimism running through your veins - incredible companies can be built in almost any space. Just right ingredients and timing needed - as your Rolodex (what is that? :-) accumulates incredible people, it becomes easier to tackle bigger/harder problems - most people are in sales. Figure out what is the ‘product’ they are selling, who is the ‘customer’, and what are you in that story. Similarly, what are you selling and to who? - Resourcefulness - both finding resources, and also doing more with less, often emerges as a key trait in people who succeed. But hard to guess/diligence in advance

I recently read a short story that I love: The Farmer and the Horse. It has two deep lessons everyone needs to hear... There was a farmer in a small village with a single horse who helped him earn a living for his family. The other villagers constantly told the farmer how lucky he was to have such a great horse. "Maybe," he would reply. One day, the horse ran away. The villagers came to the farmer to express their sympathies. "Your horse ran away. How unfortunate!" the villagers exclaimed. "Maybe," the farmer replied. A few days later, the horse returned home, with ten strong wild horses in tow. "What good fortune. What incredible luck," the villagers crowed. "Maybe," the farmer again replied. The following week, the farmer’s son was riding one of the wild horses in the fields, when it kicked him off and broke his leg. The villagers arrived to express their dismay. "What dismal luck," they said. "Maybe," the farmer replied. The next month, a military officer marched into the village, recruiting able-bodied young men for the war. The farmer’s son, with his broken leg, was left behind. The villagers were joyful, "Your son has been spared. What beautiful luck!" The farmer simply smiled. "Maybe." Two Lessons from the Short Story 1. Everything is Cyclical Seeds of destruction are sown during creation. Seeds of creation are sown during destruction. When times are bright, enjoy, but know the dark will come. When times are dark, adjust your eyes, and remember the seeds of light are being sown. 2. Dispel the Narratives The farmer separates story from reality. He allows space for the events to just exist, to be neither good nor bad—to just be. Events of your life needn't be judged. The wisest among us allow events to exist without applying a narrative layer. Remember these two lessons as you navigate uncharted waters in the days, weeks, and months ahead. Enjoy this? Share it with your network and follow me @SahilBloom for more in future.

Low hanging fruit for growth on YouTube Refreshing your titles. Go through your catalogue one by one and really ask if you would click that titles? Could it be better? Could it grab more attention? Easiest way to get a second squeeze of the juice. 🧃
