I’m a fun comic book podcast that talks about books that came out 20 years ago. Nothing about that is more important than the political climate in the US right now. Follow me on Bluesky for comic takes but here it’s strictly me being angry.

15 years ago today, October 12, 2011, after the Red Sox blew a 9-game Wild Card lead and missed the playoffs, owner John Henry walked into Felger & Mazz unannounced to confront his critics on live radio. On the same day, The Boston Globe's notorious front page hit piece on Terry Francona, widely seen by most as part of a campaign to scapegoat the manager for ownership's failures. Two years later, Henry bought the Globe, adding region's biggest newspaper to a media empire that already included team’s propaganda outlet NESN and ties to WEEI, giving him a powerful shield from scrutiny.

Higher costs are making life harder is an understatement. People cannot afford to live with the way things are. Can't afford food cant afford Healthcare. I hope someone tracks how many people die because their premiums went up this month and they couldn't afford to pay it.
Remember when Donald Trump promised his "Big Beautiful Bill" would make your life easier? 5 MILLION Americans got cut off SNAP. 15 MILLION are projected to lose health insurance. Higher costs are making life even harder.

NEW: McDonald's prices have doubled in the last ten years. The profits have gone mostly to shareholders, who got nearly $40 billion in dividends over the past decade while customers suffer and workers are underpaid. Here's how fast food is the latest victim of enshittification.

Wendy's and Jersey Mike's have gotten worse — and @stavvybaby knows why: "It's getting s***tier because some d***head who's never f***ing spread mayo in his life decided, 'Oh no, actually, instead of a sandwich, this is now a commodity.'"

489 Days.⏳ With Marvel’s Wolverine arriving as one of the final major PlayStation releases before Sony ends production of physical game discs in January 2028, this could be a very interesting test for physical demand. Look at the chart below! These figures show that major PlayStation games have historically had significant physical demand, even as digital sales have grown. In terms of VGP pre-order numbers, Marvel’s Wolverine has been our best-selling first-party PlayStation 5 game ever. We hope Sony eventually publishes the physical vs. digital sales breakdown on this one. NO DISC 💿NO BUY

At what point does doing all these recalls become more expensive than just upholding the food safety standards that we had in place for decades?

NEW: America’s biggest berry empire doesn’t actually grow berries. Driscoll’s is the middleman that controls the genetics, reaps the profits, and then shifts blame. A whistleblower alleges the Canadian government repeatedly flagged their berries for exceeding pesticide limits.

Burn private equity to the ground.
‘Travel sports,’ a term that has come to encompass all sorts of private teams, leagues, and clubs, used to be for the truly exceptional young athlete. Now, they’re for anyone willing to pay — an expensive, exhausting commitment that has become popular not necessarily because millions of parents want them for their children but because it can feel like there’s no other choice. Rec programs are underfunded and struggle to compete with for-profit leagues for prime field, rink, and court times. And the level of play is diluted, often very early, as travel teams are incentivized to enroll children at young ages. Around 5 million children in the U.S. now compete on travel teams. Parents find themselves trapped. They know the benefits of sports and want that for their children, yet giving it to them often means buying into a sports ecosystem that’s inherently flawed. As the pay-to-play model increasingly takes hold, so does the idea that kids should start competing at younger and younger ages, risking their sense of self along with their shoulders and ACLs. “I never want my kids to look back and say I didn’t do everything I could to help them live their dreams,” a mother of three soccer players said. She’s hired professional photographers to take action shots for her 12- and 13-year-olds’ Instagram accounts — the platform has become a recruiting tool — and they’ve both asked her to pay for personal trainers. “I think the word isn’t ‘specialize’; you are ‘professionalizing’ your kid early. You are exposing them to everything professionals have to deal with — I’m talking injury, time, schedule, everything,” said John Van Benschoten, a former MLB player and travel-baseball coach. It makes one ask: All this for what? And for whom? Read Caitlin Moscatello’s cover story on how travel leagues have made youth sports more expensive, hypercompetitive, and all-consuming — and the investors who are making a killing: nymag.visitlink.me/1-gbZQ

It absolutely rules that the President of the United States was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman, then found guilty of defaming her, then continuously goes to the Supreme Court to avoid paying her, and we’re all just like “lol whatever trans athletes, amirite?”
