I am working on multiple H5N1 projects & thus have a higher risk of exposure than the public. I am not STOCKPILING antivirals, nor will I do so. It’s unethical & selfish to hoard medications needed by others or to select for drug-resistant variants by taking them off-label.

A really important thread on the #H5N1 #birdflu outbreak in cows. Well worth a read.
Very important to note here that qPCR positives are not the same as "virus particles." It's much easier to detect viral RNA by qPCR than it is to detect infectious virus or intact virus particles (as the article correctly notes). This finding does have some big implications:

This is called an Omega sunset It looks like the Greek letter Omega (Ω) due to sunlight refracting through warm air just above the water. The “feet” of the Ω are just inverted images of the parts of the Sun directly above them. The inverted part of the image, below the fold line, is an inferior mirage, named so because it appears below the "real" sun. This mirage occurs due to refraction caused by a layer of warmer and less dense air near the ocean's surface. [📸 Juan Antonio Sendra]

I love Susan Sontag's radical vision for reimagining education — no school between ages 12 and 16, then go back to school for those extra four years at 50 themarginalian.org/2013/02/0…

I love this story of how this Californian reading group spent longer reading Finnegans Wake than James Joyce spent writing it. It's the only Joyce I've yet to read too. theguardian.com/books/2023/n…
