Too many kids fall behind during math lessons because they don't know their math facts. Don't let this happen to your child this year. Send them to FactFreaks, the website I created to get my students up to speed with all 400 basic facts. It only takes a minute to play, they can learn their facts from scratch with the new Basic Training feature, and best of all, it's 100% free, no ads. Start giving your kid an edge in math class right now!

What happens when math worksheets actually model the math with an example for everything? Find out this year: all 560 You Teach You activities are now live on Teachers Pay Teachers. That's a “See it, Do it, Check it” worksheet for every K to 8 topic you teach. No more “What am I supposed to do?” No more unguided guessing. No more practicing mistakes. No more pulling your hair out trying to help every kid at once. Mastery without misery is here 👇

I built FactFreaks to get all of my students up to speed with their basic math facts. It's been gratifying beyond belief to see it work just as well for students everywhere as it did in my classroom all those years ago. Here's to free and fun fact fluency for all!

It can be used for diagnostic purposes, but it's meant for mastery. I recommend 5 minutes a day at first, and keeping spreadsheets so that you always know where each student is in each operation, with the goal being 40 facts per minute over time in +, -, x and /. I also recommend having students compete against themselves only at first, with the goal of each game being to simply beat their previous high score in that operation. I also recommend the Basic Training feature for those students who need to learn their facts from scratch; Basic Training doesn't stop gameplay for incorrect answers. Please let me know how it goes!

So common - and so preventable with FactFreaks.com. 100% free. Super fun. Over 10 million games played. And players can learn their facts from scratch with the Basic Training feature. Don't let students start the school year without it!
Just received a call from a parent. "My son is in fifth grade. He's struggling with math. I think it all stems from not memorizing his basic facts...whenever he sees a calculation he doesn't know, he shuts down."

Lately there's been a lot of debate here on eduTwitter: do we need to produce millions of expert math teachers or should we just hand the classroom over to AI? Let's be honest: millions of expert math teachers aren't going to be produced anytime soon. But that doesn't mean we have to settle for a teacherless alternative. Cognitive science has been recommending worked examples in the classroom for decades. When the instructional materials themselves feature a one-to-one relationship between worked examples and practice problems, the teachers who lack expertise can develop it along 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 their students. With good old pencil and paper, and not a screen in sight. Sound like pie in the sky? I've spent decades building and battle-testing these kinds of materials in real classrooms and with the input of real teachers. See examples at the link below.

Worked examples are solutions, not problems: they are concrete examples, one of 6 researched verified learning strategies. W/o them, a learning experience is unstructured + unsupported by PIE (proof, information, examples.) Worked examples bridge learning gaps!
Which homework assignment does a kid actually learn from? Which one stops the tears at the kitchen table? Math homework without examples is nothing but problems.

We spend enormous effort optimizing how to get one teacher to teach the same topic to 30 students at the same time, instead of asking whether that model itself is the bottleneck.

I told myself no more books with “How” or “Learn” in the title for a while, but then this was staring me in the face at the public library yesterday, and I couldn’t say no. I think I officially have a problem.

For the neuroscience of learning, add in How We Learn by Stanislas Dehaene.
If you want a solid course on the science of learning, these are my two recommendations: How Do We Learn by Hector Ruiz Martin a.co/d/09OTrrZo and How Teaching and Learning Happens online course by @C_Hendrick and @DrJimHeal htalh.com/
