My boss praised me in meetings, but I later discovered he was preparing someone else to take over my work. At first, I thought I had finally found a good workplace. Whenever a project went well, my manager praised me. He would mention my attention to detail, how quickly I solved problems, and how the team could rely on me when things became difficult. I believed him. I was the person colleagues contacted when an issue refused to go away. If a deadline was approaching, I was usually the one staying late to help the team finish. I didn't mind helping. I thought being dependable would eventually lead to growth. Then I started noticing small changes. My manager began asking me to document processes I had handled for months. He wanted detailed notes on how I deployed projects, fixed production issues, and managed certain client requests. That sounded reasonable, so I did it. A few weeks later, a newer colleague began joining meetings I used to attend alone. My manager told me he was helping the colleague learn. I didn't object.
