The first eth community meetup in kz
Couldn’t be more happier 🚀
I have to admit I had a bunch of misconceptions about Kazakhstan. When @ns announced its move to Astana, my first reaction was: why move a community of mostly digital nomads to what I imagined was a conservative and cold country in Central Asia?
Turns out I had some homework to do, so I had to go and see for myself!
Here is why it makes sense:
Kazakhs have a nomadic heritage that reaches into recent family history - think 2–3 generations of settlers after centuries of nomadic tribes. The name “Kazakh” itself apparently has associations with an independent, wandering life (thank you, @vrneth). When you think about mobile people building strong communities on the go, the connection to network states starts to feel less surprising.
Then there’s Astana: a city transformed within a generation after becoming the capital in 1997. The infrastructure is already in place - I kid you not, but it reminded me of visiting Dubai for the first time 15 years ago, minus the heat, plus walkability. The local government wants more international talent and is actively helping NS bring it here. Things seem to move quickly when there’s a will to make them happen. Also, the international presence around the Expo area (where NS is located) is noticeable. I experienced firsthand how eager locals are to talk to strangers, having multiple random, pleasant interactions on the street.
@sericssonn a local community lead who very kindly welcomed me to Astana, explained a lot of the context and heritage (I’m very grateful for everything!). He told me that seeking out travelers or those with experience from abroad and learning from them is deeply rooted in Kazakh culture — how else would they know what was happening in the lands they were about to move their entire tribe into? Today, that sounds like a useful instinct for attracting global builders and a startup society such as @ns.
My visit was short, so consider this a first impression. But it was so strong that I’ll surely be back to learn more!
love it. the renaissance of ascii art

Good Will Hunting GPU Edition
Ep. 2: My Boy's Wicked Smaht
Ben Affleck reveals he writes Python, understands convolutional neural networks, worked extensively with GPUs, and used his celebrity status to get private looks at Google and OpenAI’s video models
“I’ve always been kind of into computers since I was young. Then, when film started to move from analog film to digital, I became more interested in that aspect of it. The visual-effects workflow for many years has included machine learning, so I can write pretty shitty Python scripts and stuff like that.
“With convolutional neural networks, which were the precursors to what the transformer can do, which is much more computation simultaneously, you would do things like look at what’s called a tensor. That’s the numerical translation of a visual image in numbers, like the batch number, the frame number and the red, green and blue values of each pixel in each frame. It’s just that simple. That numeric is called a tensor.
“You’d use a convolutional neural network to identify patterns that reveal what’s called edge detection or feature extraction, which is identifying patterns well enough to know, this is where the window ledge is, so we can more easily take the green-screen image out and replace it with something.
“That was familiar to me early on because, prior to Artists Equity, I had a small visual-effects company. I’ve worked with GPUs a lot too. The visual-effects guys said, ‘Hey, you should see. There are a couple: Google and this other company, OpenAI, are doing really interesting stuff with transformers in video.’
“I’ve learned that I can actually just call up and go, ‘Hey, it’s Ben Affleck. Can I come see what you’re doing?’ Sometimes people say yes, to my astonishment.”

Pretty clear Kazakhstan is going to become the next "you met me at a very Chinese point in my life".

A lot of founders I talk to are worried about what will happen with AI. So am I frankly. But they're actually better off than anyone else. If the world is going to get turned upside down, the safest place to be is in a small, fast-moving company that can easily change direction.
