How do we know if justice interventions are actually working? And can the justice community use evidence to make better decisions about where resources should go?
Justice systems have never had more data, but they have not always been able to answer the question: are people actually able to resolve their justice problems fairly and effectively?
This year, @OECD published a new framework trying to answer this question. @nyucic’s @marani_fernando breaks down how this new framework could serve as a practical tool to deliver people-centered justice outcomes.
🔹 As part of the work of the #JusticeActionCoalition’s Workstream on Data and Evidence, this paper offers a common framework to help policymakers better understand what is working, where gaps remain, and where resources can have the greatest impact.
The framework connects three elements that are too often considered separately:
➕ Government policy and resources.
🟤 Justice services that people actually encounter.
🧰 Outcomes those services produce.
🇹🇷 This month, the team is headed to Istanbul to advance these conversations at the annual Justice Action Coalition meeting + the #OECDRoundtable on Equal Access to Justice.

How do we connect global policy and practical applications, and where does the multilateral system fit into tackling our society’s pressing issues of peace, justice, equity, artificial intelligence (AI), and more?
🇺🇳 #NYUCIC joined colleagues during the 2026 United Nations High-Level Week for a series of discussions covering UN reform, inequality, justice systems, AI governance… and also celebrated our very own 30th anniversary and new home at the @NYU Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service.
What a week! Thank you to the 1,000+ members of the CIC community for joining us at events all across New York City.

How can transitional justice become more people-centered?
Yesterday, the African Alliance for People-Centered Justice (AAPCJ) and the Ibero-American Alliance for Access to Justice brought experts and practitioners together to share what works.
The dialogue explored trust-building, gender-responsive justice, and diverse pathways to justice, peace, and inclusion.
➕ The result: an agreement to co-develop an interregional note on people-centered transitional justice.

How can collaboration help transform the way justice is designed, financed and delivered? 🤝
In this video message for Workshop 2, “Ensuring Equal Access to Justice for All,” at @UNODC's 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Abu Dhabi, @marani_fernando, Deputy Director, @nyuCIC reflects on the role of cross-sectoral collaboration in advancing people-centered justice.
People do not experience justice as a collection of institutions—they experience justice through the problems they need to solve. Yet justice systems are often organized around separate institutions, mandates and funding streams. Bridging this gap requires collaboration that goes beyond bringing different actors to the same table and instead helps reshape how justice needs are understood, priorities are set, resources are allocated and solutions are delivered.
Drawing on the work of Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies, Fernando highlights three examples of collaboration at the global and regional levels:
🔵 The Justice Action Coalition, bringing together countries and international partners to advance practical approaches to people-centered justice.
🟡 The Ibero-American Alliance for Access to Justice, including its work to strengthen regional cooperation and the adoption of the Ibero-American Convention on Access to Justice.
🟢 The African Alliance for People-Centered Justice, which recognizes the diversity of justice pathways and the importance of connecting formal, customary, community-based and informal justice mechanisms.
Across these experiences, one message stands out: the success of collaboration should ultimately be measured not by how many actors participate, but by whether it changes how justice problems are identified, where resources go, who participates in designing solutions, and whether justice systems respond more effectively to the problems people actually face.

HAPPENING NOW: An international panel on inequality could help build a shared, independent evidence base on the drivers of inequality, its impacts and the policies that can reduce it.

During #UNGA81 my colleagues from @Oxfam @ituc @FightInequality and @SDG16Plus @OpenSociety organised a massive civil society gathering in support of the creation of an International Panel on #Inequality. The thread below gives a great overview of the event.
But, here below, my key five highlights and an extra one.
1. We need people mobilization. We need to mobilize anger.
2. Rebuilding the state through #TaxtheSuperRich is the main tool to put inequality at the centre of the stage. @pedroabramovay @SurRuiz
3. We need a big win in multilateralism. An IPI is exactly this. Far right is a project of inequality & dependence
4. We need to address the material needs of working class people. @nychange
5. Democracy does not defend by itself @saritasgupta we need to strong against oligarchs to get bargaining power @AgnesCallamard
And last by @CathyFeingold "movements have a responsibility to build a more hopeful vision..let's not mix multilateralism with neoliberalism".
@AmitabhBehar with the opening remarks: Firstly, we’re here in the context of the inequality crisis. At the moment 3,000 billionaires with the combined wealth of 18 trillion, 5,000 times the budget of the UN, but a quarter of the global population is food insecure.
Pathfinders retweeted
🌍 Could an International Panel on Inequality help turn shared evidence into more effective action? That question was at the heart of “Tackling the Inequality Crisis: Why an International Panel on Inequality Is Needed Now,” held during the UN General Assembly High-Level Week (#UNGA81).
Paul Smoke, Executive Director of #NYUCIC, joined a panel on extreme inequality and the worldwide affordability crisis. He drew attention to how public money moves between levels of government. Local and regional governments often deliver the services and support that low-income households rely on, yet the funding they receive from national governments does not always reflect community needs. Public investment also falls short of closing gaps in infrastructure and essential services. He argued that the proposed International Panel on Inequality (IPI) could help international agencies work from shared evidence and cooperate more effectively on challenges like these.
Paul spoke alongside Jayati Ghosh (@Jayati1609), Vice Chair of the IPI Founding Committee; @pedroabramovay of @OpenSociety; and Jenny Ricks of @FightInequality. Open Society Foundations hosted the event, with
@Oxfam, @ituc, @FightInequality, and @SDG16Plus
as co-sponsors.

We will not prevent crime, sustain peace, or close the justice gap through formal criminal justice institutions alone. We need a whole-of-justice ecosystem approach, grounded in evidence and anchored in human rights. 🤖 How can emerging technologies help build more people-centered justice systems? ⚖️
Earlier this year, Nate Edwards, Program Officer for Justice, Inclusion, and Equality with @SDG16Plus at #NYUCIC, joined the @WorldBankGroup’s Digital Justice Working Group to explore this question.
In a short video, Nate and Floris de Klerk Wolters of @DCAF_Geneva reflect on the discussion and summarize working group presentations on the opportunities and challenges that digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) present in the justice sector.

This work connects closely with the Justice Action Coalition’s thematic track on emerging technology, AI, and justice, which seeks to ensure that technological innovation advances access to justice while protecting rights and responding to people’s needs.

📢 How can justice systems harness the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence (AI) while protecting human rights, ensuring accountability, and keeping people’s lived experiences at the center?
With support from a new $250,000 grant from the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation (@PJMFdn), Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies (@SDG16Plus)—an initiative hosted by #NYUCIC—will develop an international people-centered justice and AI framework. ⚖️🤖
Created in coordination with the Justice Action Coalition, and with active contributions from @ODI_Global, @UNHumanRights, @WorldBankGroup, and @InnoJustice, the framework will offer practical guidance to policymakers and justice leaders. Our team will then work with 3️⃣ national governments to adapt the guidance and prepare them to pilot specific projects. 🌍
🚨The need is urgent: More than 5 billion people live outside the reach of the justice systems meant to protect them, while AI is already reshaping those systems.
