#SupremeCourtPH (SC) Senior Associate Justice (SAJ) Marvic M.V.F. Leonen urged legal professionals and students to use artificial intelligence (AI) critically, warning that unmindful use of the technology could lead to injustice. Speaking to the participants of the SC’s AI Caravan lecture at the University of the Philippines College of Law in Diliman, Quezon City, on October 12, 2026, SAJ Leonen emphasized that people, lawyers, or judges who understand AI critically have an advantage over those who do not. The lecture, titled “The Critical Use of AI: Challenges for the Philippine Legal Profession and the Judiciary,” is part of the SC’s efforts to guide the public on the 𝘎𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯-𝘊𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘈𝘶𝘨𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘑𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘳𝘺. Within the Judiciary, SAJ Leonen said the SC has allowed only one AI tool, Scriptix, a voice-to-text transcription program used by stenographers across the country. He explained that stenographers remained essential despite the use of the tool because human control, editing, and human-centeredness require a stenographer to review the text captured by multi-directional microphones in courtrooms before a judge allows it to become the official transcript. As part of its 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘤 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘑𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 2022–2027, the SC has also pursued digitalization, which SAJ Leonen explained is distinct from AI. Through the eCourt system, SAJ Leonen noted that the SC’s digitalization initiatives have improved court processes, including the filing and service of pleadings, judgments, and other papers in civil cases. Processes that previously took months or even years have been shortened through electronic processes. He warned that although both digitalization and AI offer advantages, they also pose risks. To address these threats, he said the SC has established cybersecurity rules and issued an administrative order directing judges and court personnel to observe what is known as cyber hygiene. The #SupremeCourtPH has approved amendments to the 𝘙𝘶𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘵 (A.M. No. 25-03-14-SC) to make it easier for Filipino spouses to prove a foreign divorce when seeking its recognition in Philippine courts. The Amendments will take effect on October 31, 2026, after 15 calendar days from posting on the Supreme Court Website.
