Kurt Cobain knew the guitar riff of “Come As You Are” bore a resemblance to Killing Joke’s “Eighties”, reportedly making him wary of releasing it as a single. Nirvana went ahead, and the song became one of the biggest tracks from their 1991 album Nevermind, produced by Butch Vig. Its watery guitar sound came from Cobain’s use of an Electro-Harmonix Small Clone chorus pedal, which became closely associated with the recording. At New York’s Roseland Ballroom in July 1993, Nirvana played it during a remarkable set that also previewed several songs from the then-unreleased In Utero.
