Thanks to @cogsmsu for putting on an awesome fall welcome cookout! ((And treating me to a night of wine & paints))
Today I got to demo an aspect of my research to congressional staff members who were SO excited to hear about nose to brain delivery. Enthusiastic nods and smiles from the audience are my favorite (!!!) part of SciComm.
What fields your scicomm spirit? 👩🔬🗣️

We are having #scipol lunches at @michiganstateu this Fall! They will be every other Thursday at the engineering building room 3540. We will start with what is policy and then grow from there. We hope to see you all there!

Hi everyone! Today I @WhySharksMatter am going to talk about some of the #SciComm strategies I use: specifically, #SharkWeek live commentary, tweeting from from conferences, and my weekly “ask me anything” sessions on twitter! (Here I am with a massive sharpnose shark)

This is what #scicomm is, really. But the joke is that scientists think facts change minds. You could replace GMOs with any topic, pro- or anti-. We all have beliefs, biases, and values that define what facts matter to us.
Facts don’t change minds.
Usual response to my #scicomm: I want to hate GMOs

I find that I strongly prefer to use gender neutral terms like “parent” instead of “mother/father” and “spouse/partner” instead of “husband/wife.”
I feel like these are more inclusive and push back against gender biases, stereotypes, and expectations. Anyone else do this too?

What you need to be a physicist:
- An interest in physics
- A desire & ability to learn math & physics
- The grit to get through difficult times in your career
What you don't need:
- To be a genius
- A large ego
- Unwavering belief that you are "cut out to be a physicist"
Replying to @Quasilocal @WKCosmo
I really hate the "wow you must be so smart." I know it's supposed to be a compliment, but the "genius" in STEM trope is a big reason I doubted myself so much in undergrad and I think it keeps people from going into science if they don't consider themselves a genius

I’ve handled the review of > 1000 papers at @nature. Over time, you notice aspects of presentation on which reviewers tend to comment. In the interests of minimizing hassles during review, I offer the following suggestions (a bit targeted to climate papers).
