I wish it was more common knowledge that almost all regulations exist because companies weren’t doing these things on their own and bad things were happening because of it.
Turns out that food companies were only checking their food because the government told them to which is exactly why we need government regulations

Just saw The Odyssey, I loved it but was really surprised it featured so many Minions. Not saying it’s bad or inaccurate. I’m aware of its oral history, so there’s no way to know Homer didn’t include Minions. But it was like 98% Minions. Didn’t even mention Odysseus.

We need a “Not interested, this is AI” button or a proper AI blocker. The algorithm needs to learn how badly most people don’t want AI slop.

arxiv imposing a 1 year ban on authors who submit hallucinated references is good. Authors should be able to write with AI but need to be fully accountable for catching that level of error. Doesn't matter if humans also sometimes cite non-existent things. 1 year ban them too.

"essential to the curriculum" yikes
Kids in Lower Merion school district in Pennsylvania get iPads starting in kindergarten, switch to Chromebooks in second grade and get their own MacBooks in eighth grade. Hundreds of parents signed a petition asking to preserve their ability to opt their children out of using digital devices during the school day. The school district has pushed back, saying it’s not feasible to let hundreds of students opt out of technology that is essential to the curriculum.

We have sent a notice to cease & desist to the Milwaukee Brewers. Having rain fall inside a stadium with a closed retractable roof is the intellectual property of the Montreal Expos.

If you're using AI to write essays, eulogies, your wedding vows (!), I do think less of you as a person. Ceding your mental and creative abilities to a machine is an embarrassing thing and people should be ashamed to admit doing it in public.

Withdrawal policies are entangled with everything else. Pass fail deadlines. Add/drop periods. Grade forgiveness. Financial aid rules. Visa requirements. Student-athlete eligibility. Change one piece and others shift with it. Read my latest: bradknight.substack.com/p/wi…

Why would I want to play a game someone couldn’t even be bothered to make. Why would I want to read and listen to dialogue someone couldn’t be bothered to translate themselves. If it’s not worth the effort for a studio to make it, why would I want to play it.

A lot of the current discourse about AI comes from a fatalistic position of total surrender of agency: "tech is moving in this direction and there's nothing anyone can do about it" (suspiciously convenient for those who stand to benefit most) But in a free society, we get to choose what kind of world we live in, independent of technological capabilities. Just because tetraethyllead made engines run more efficiently and saved money didn't mean we were *obligated* to pump it into the lungs of our kids Technological determinism is BS. We have a collective duty to make sure AI adoption improves the human condition, rather than hollows it out

As someone who really enjoys looking at the menu and deciding what to eat for an upcoming mean, I totally agree
Dear every chain restaurant: I just wanna look at the FUCKING MENU. WHY DO YOU MAKE ME SELECT THE LOCATION AND THEN PRETEND IM GONNA ORDER FOOD JUST SO I CAN SEE MY OPTIONS. WHY CAN'T Y'ALL JUST HAVE THE FUCKING MENU ONLINE LIKE ANY NORMAL RESTAURANT?

I really can’t even tell y’all how much I hate the excessive use and inclusion of AI in everything nowadays, why tf does iMessage give you an AI summary of your unread messages? We are losing human autonomy and creating cognitive dependencies, this is ARTIFICIAL STUPIDITY

I had colleagues evangelizing “your syllabus needs to be an NFT” and “universities will sell all their buildings to teach in the metaverse” and that it was irresponsible to not spread those truths to all faculty. It left me really skeptical of the next thing and the next
All the same people who were hyping crypto then NFTs then virtual reality are now pumping AI agents.
