I’m currently dealing with the side effects of a white blood cell injection. It stimulates my bone marrow & is painful. My job is to get through the pain. Today, my close friend Myron cleaned up my profile picture. Things like this help me get through the hardest rounds. -m

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my friend, the legendary former Michigan State Track & Field head coach Jim Bibbs.
Coach Bibbs was a giant in the state of Michigan and a true trailblazer. As the first Black head coach in MSU history and the first Black head coach in the Big Ten, he opened doors that so many have walked through since. But anyone who knew him will tell you his greatest impact wasn’t measured in wins or records. It was in the lives he touched. He was a mentor, a role model, and someone who genuinely cared about the people around him, on and off the track and throughout the entire Lansing community.
Cookie and I will be praying for his family during this difficult time 🙏🏾

I finished my 4th chemo treatment. None are easy. Fortunately, I’m surrounded by friends & family who check in & lift my spirits. On one occasion, Chuck D checked in & said, “You are Black Steel,” a reference to his song, Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos. I needed that & now. -m

Was an honor to serve as MC at the Hannan Center’s 70 over Seventy awards, honoring our community’s top leaders over 70 years old. All of the awardees show us that a new chapter of life starts at 70. Was really special to award my friend, Huel Perkins with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the people of Greater Detroit.

PET CT Scan Update: The large tumor mass in my stomach is gone, along with the cancer that had spread to my bone marrow. Only a small amount remains. I’m still bald. I’m still standing, and I still have plenty of fight left in me. Love. -m

Pain and suffering are companions on my journey, but make no mistake about it, they are not my friends. -m

Another walk, another mile. Considering I couldn’t walk without assistance last month. I’ll take this as a win. -m

I just walked a mile. Last month I could barely walk. A few weeks ago, I was using a walker. One step at a time. -m

Today, we witness the suffering of so many broken families, whether because of drug use, violence, the criminal recruitment of a child, poverty, or a lack of opportunities that pushes people to the margins.

I appreciate everyone who took the time yesterday to contact me with birthday wishes & support. I spent the day at the cancer institute. My son Justin stayed, along with my Pops, who flew in from Detroit, & showed up at my door without warning. But that is another story. Love -m

I’ve been in the hospital since Sunday by way of an ambulance. I’ve never had a greater appreciation for EMT and Healthcare professionals. Gratitude. Love -m

When I was in the hospital my youngest brother would drive one hour to spend every night with me, sleeping on the couch next to my bed. -m

As Christine and Elmore Wonsley grieved the heartbreaking loss of their son, Nolan Xavier Wells, I took a quiet moment to pray for them.
Please join me in lifting this family in prayer. May God surround them with His strength, comfort them in their grief, and give them the courage to face the difficult days ahead. We will continue to stand with them as they seek truth, transparency, and justice for Nolan.
