This is so awful. My grandad lost his legs in the 80s in an accident and I imagine while the treatment & technology is better, the psychological impact will be devastating. I’m so glad she has so much support
Phil Haines confirms that Helen has tragically now also lost her second leg 😢 but she is stable and alive.🩵 #auspol

From The Gherk on Facebook. There is very little that I need to add to this… other than - who should we be looking at for normalising violence in this country and what should we be doing about it? 👇🏻 The Gherk: “We need to cool the political temperature in this country. A part of that means being honest about where some of the heat has come from. For years, parts of the Murdoch media ecosystem have treated casually violent language about public officials as entertainment. Different targets. Different presenters. Different political moments. Same underlying habit. Violence gets turned into a punchline. Threatening language gets dressed up as banter. If anyone complains, it becomes “light-hearted”, “non-literal”, “obviously a joke”, or everyone else being too sensitive and "go to your safe space". And then we all act shocked when the broader political culture becomes more aggressive, more dehumanising and more comfortable with the idea that elected officials are not fellow citizens to disagree with, but enemies to be humiliated, threatened or fantasised about hurting. Words are not the same as actions... of course they aren’t. But culture matters. Repeatedly normalising violent imagery around politicians lowers the threshold for what starts to feel acceptable. It changes the atmosphere. And it teaches audiences that rage is authenticity. That cruelty is strength. That threatening language is just another way of showing you’re politically serious. And it’s not just what gets said. How many front pages and splash graphics have we seen over the years with politicians framed inside rifle scopes, crosshairs, targets or gun sights because somebody in a newsroom thought it looked punchy? Again, a graphic is not an attack. But if your political visual language constantly borrows from weapons, execution, hunting and physical harm, you are helping build a culture where violent imagery around public figures feels normal. At some point, “it’s just a metaphor” becomes a pretty weak defence when the metaphors have been doing the heavy lifting for years. Then one day someone actually crosses the line and everyone suddenly discovers a deep commitment to civility. That’s the part I am struggling with. You cannot spend years monetising anger, grievance and fantasies of political violence and then act completely bewildered when public discourse starts to resemble a pub argument five schooners past sensible. This is bigger than left versus right. Anyone doing it should stop. Politicians. Media personalities. Influencers. Creators. All of us. Once violence becomes just another rhetorical prop, it becomes easier to forget there are actual human beings on the other end of the sentence. The person you hate politically still has a family. The person you think is incompetent still has kids. The person you want voted out is still not someone who should be threatened, assaulted or treated as less than human. We do not need to turn every disagreement into a blood feud. And we absolutely do not need a media culture that treats fantasies of political violence as a cheeky little ratings strategy. Maybe the standard should be very simple. Argue hard. Mock freely. Criticise mercilessly. But stop casually talking about hurting people. It is not edgy. It is not clever. And after everything we’ve seen lately, it is not harmless either.” Thank you, Mr Gherk🙏🏻 As an aside, I have noticed that ALL associations of Murdoch media have been busy in the last 24 hours pumping out the “Albo” rhetoric as the instigator of this violence. Look past Otto the real perpetrators. We really have to do something about the media and hateful populist rhetoric in this country. If you can’t do anything else - at least be kind.

A small mercy in all this is seeing how widely Helen Haines is cherished. We need the best of us in politics. And we should be grateful when they make it there.

Has the Australian mainstream media reflected at all on their role in this? Someone should write a piece on the numerous times radio shock jocks and breakfast tv and late night commentators have promoted violence against politicians or public figures. #auspol #media #HelenHaines

Smart move, Canada! 🇨🇦 Mark Carney confirms Canada is reducing its reliance on Elon Musk’s Starlink. Because national security shouldn't depend on a billionaire's mood swings. 👏 cultmtl.com/2026/09/canada-c…

An ABC News live blog included a 1:34 video of Dr Haines being moved from an air ambulance in Melb. Filming a seriously unwell person on a stretcher from a distance and publishing it is an intrusion into one of the most private moments a person can have. I’ve lodged a complaint.

Opinion rather than fact on ABC is not going to help.
Replying to @ShereleMoody
Just listening to ABC radio and journo asked what might Helen have done to upset people. Seems victim blaming and justifying attempted murder is normalised.

Helen Haines is one of the kindest people I know - a hardworking, thoughtful MP who is always ready with a smile and a story when we walk down to Question Time together. I’m utterly shocked by today’s attack, and my thoughts are with Helen and her family. #auspol

Shocking. 💔 My love and thoughts to Helen #Haines and her family ❤️ Police are investigating if a targeted attack. Violence has no place in our democracy, in our community or towards anyone for simply serving our community.

We don’t use Starlink for our responses inside Russia. We use Starlink to intercept jet-powered “shaheds” that attack our civilians and kill families. Starlink wasn’t turned off – its speed was reduced. And when the speed was reduced, we were unable to intercept a certain number of jet-powered “shaheds.” We couldn’t use a tool that helps protect people. That’s very painful and frustrating. We also use Starlink for mid-range strikes against enemy military targets in our temporarily occupied territories. We couldn’t do that when the restrictions were in place. And third, what matters most is people. Our warriors, who spend weeks and months on the front line, receive food and water delivered by drones using Starlink. Has the speed been fully restored to what it was before? No. Is it being restored now? Yes. From a conversation with media representatives in Brussels. (2/3)

We have to protect children.
This is the attitude behind every racist shitbag on this platform. Part of a little girl’s skull was found near Mackay in Qld. The skull was taken to the local pub. The locals used it as a communal ashtray. Why? Because they thought it was an Indigenous girl’s skill. They felt bad only when it was revealed to be from a white girl’s murder. Forget the spin, forget how innocuous they pretend to be, THIS is who they really are. abc.net.au/news/2026-10-15/m…
