Without a true street-to-home/Housing First program, NYC will always be fighting street homelessness with one hand behind its back. In the meantime, we need to fix this!
New York City is spending millions on services for homeless people living on the street. But more New Yorkers are sleeping outside than ever before. gothamist.visitlink.me/x-d1V…

I don't know if I'm emotionally stable enough to handle this information
He got it from his mama.
Bear 89, aka Backpack, is the 2026 Fat Bear Week champ. Turns out hefty runs in the family.
His mom, Holly the Duchess of Density, won in 2019. She carried him on her back as a cub and helped him survive a serious leg injury. Now her little Backpack has a crown of his own. 👑
Automated Public Toilets (run by JCdecaux under a franchise agreement with DOT) have cost 25 cents for a 15-minute limit since their introduction to NYC in ~2003. I get some of the more legitimate reasons people don't like this time limit, but it's also not a novel thing.
The 10-minute time limits on the Mamdani bathrooms are going to face a disability lawsuit. And it goes to unresolved question about disability rights in fraught, conflicted spaces open to the public: is it OK to build something that serves 90-95 percent of people perfectly fine 90-95 percent of the time, but will truly cause distress to the balance of people the balance of time?

🚽This week has been flush with bathroom news!🧵
Today, I joined @NYCMayor for the launch of 17 modular 🚽 from @ThroneBathrooms. A city this great shouldn’t leave people searching for somewhere to go.
Go check out District 37's #Throne at Fulton St. & Truxton St!👇🏼

📣Big news! @NYCMayor and Chief Climate Officer Louise Yeung announced Annel Hernandez as NYC's Public Utility Advocate. She'll help make energy more affordable and ensure the clean energy transition benefits all New Yorkers.
Welcome, Annel!

I am so so proud of my friend and former colleague Annel. There is no one - NO ONE - more ready or equipped to fight to lower New Yorkers' energy bills. We are so lucky to have her in our corner.

Maybe it was @mcmansionhell who said it, but high quality (preferably sustainable) insulation is an underappreciated battlefront against climate change. If we can just be more efficient and help seal our building envelopes, our energy bills would go down and quality of life up!

AC saves lives, but only if the power stays on!
This heat wave’s strain on our energy grid proves we urgently need more battery energy storage systems to secure NYC’s energy future.
We have a strong coalition behind Intro 359. Let’s pass it now!

Con Edison shut off power in parts of The Bronx this afternoon “due to an electrical problem,” saying it would prevent more outages.
The Bronx had more than 5,900 reported customers without power. The rest of NYC had fewer than 550 combined.

New York ISO just issued an early warning that we must alleviate the strain on our energy grid statewide.
Please do your part in keeping our power on by:
•Setting your AC to 78 degrees.
•Turning off lights and unplugging electronics you’re not using.
•Waiting until early morning or late at night to run appliances like dishwashers or laundry machines.
During a historic heatwave, AC will save lives — but only if we keep the grid stable enough for it to stay on.
An Energy Watch for July 2 has been issued due to a decline in operating reserves. The grid is operating normally at this time and there are adequate resources to meet forecasted demand.

New York: it's hot out there, and the power grid is working overtime to keep us cool.
Set your AC to 78 degrees, turn off lights/electronics you're not using, and unplug what you can.
Our City is doing its part too: maintaining the 78 degrees rule in our buildings, dimming/turning off our lights during peak electricity demand, asking private partners to do the same, and powering down non-essential equipment.
A stable grid means the AC stays on, and lives are saved. Let's ease demand — and get through the heat — together.
