CIGAR strings in alignment files can balloon in size for long, messy reads. cigzip compresses and decompresses them using tracepoints, a clever, focused fix for a very specific pain point in long-read alignment storage.

Pangenome graphs are everywhere now, but most GWAS tooling still expects PLINK format. gfa2bin bridges that gap, converting GFA graph data (with filtering and modification commands built in) straight into PLINK-ready files.

BINSEQ is a newer binary format built for storing sequencing reads compactly, bqtools is the command-line utility for working with it. Small, unglamorous, exactly the kind of format tooling that ends up saving terabytes down the line.

Nanopore direct-RNA sequencing has a chimeric-read problem, reads that are secretly two transcripts stitched together. DeepChopper brings language models into the Rust QC pipeline to catch these artifacts before they poison your analysis.

Fresh off bioRxiv: rustybam, a Rust toolkit for CIGAR-aware manipulation of PAF and BAM alignments, paired with SafFire, a browser-based tool for interactive genome comparison visualization with annotation overlays.

Need to know what's actually in your metagenomic sample, fast? sylph does abundance-corrected MinHash genome querying and taxonomic profiling, built for the "just tell me what's there" moment every metagenomics project eventually reaches. 🔬📊

Complex polymorphic genes (think HLA-style regions) are notoriously hard to genotype accurately, locityper targets exactly these trouble spots! 🧬📄

Phylogenetics is getting a structural upgrade: unicore builds core-gene phylogenies using Foldseek and ProstT5, comparing protein structure rather than just sequence. A glimpse of where tree-building is headed. 🌳🧬

Variant effect prediction usually means waiting on a slow annotation pipeline. fastVEP is a from-scratch Rust reimplementation built purely for speed: same job, dramatically less time staring at a progress bar.⚡🧬

16S amplicon sequencing has long lived in short-read land. savont calls amplicon sequence variants directly from ONT and PacBio HiFi long reads instead, a fresh Rust tool for a technology shift that's actually happening in microbiome labs right now. 🧫🧬

xgt (by @anicetebou) brings the full GTDB API to your terminal: genome cards, metadata, taxonomic history, lineages, search, all scriptable, with batch input, parallel pagination, retries, a transparent local cache, and JSON/CSV/TSV output built in.

Deep learning meets bioinformatics I/O: DeepBioP is a Rust core with Python bindings for feeding biological data (FASTQ and beyond) into ML pipelines efficiently. pip install deepbiop, get Rust-speed preprocessing without leaving your notebook. 🧠🦀

Streaming genomic data instead of downloading whole BAM/VCF files? htsget-rs is a full Rust server implementation of the htsget protocol, built for exactly that use case. Quiet, unglamorous, and exactly the kind of infra this ecosystem needs more of. 🌐🧬
github.com/umccr/htsget-rs
Ever stared at a cryptic string like "8M2S+T" and wondered what it means for your sequencing run? read-structure (from @fulcrumgenomics) is a small, sharp Rust library for parsing exactly that, read segment layouts, made legible. 🧵🔬

Orchestrating 20,000+ concurrent bioinformatics jobs sounds like a nightmare Sprocket is a Rust workflow engine for WDL built to do exactly that. Workflow tooling finally catching up to modern dev standards. ⚙️

Synthetic biology labs generate messy, disconnected data from a dozen instruments. ro-crate-rs is a Rust library (with Python bindings) for packaging that mess into RO-Crate format; structured, FAIR-compliant, and actually reproducible. 🧫📦
github.com/intbio-ncl/ro-cra…
seqproc, from @nomad421 lab crew, is a Rust tool that turns single-cell sequencing geometry into a compact grammar. One line describes barcodes, UMIs, linkers, whatever your protocol throws at you. Faster AND more memory-efficient than the alternatives.
github.com/COMBINE-lab/seqpr…
Long-read sequencing means whole-genome alignments at scale, and the old tooling wasn't built for hundreds of genomes at once. wgatools handles conversion, filtering, variant calling AND visualization, all in one ultrafast Rust toolkit. 🧬⚡

BigWig and BigBed files have been served the same way for a decade: statically, slowly. Bigtools is a full Rust rewrite for reading AND writing them, built for the local, fast-querying world we actually live in now. 📊doi.org/10.1093/bioinformati…

Mass spec proteomics usually means Java or C++. Sage flips that: 100+ citations, 500k+ invocations logged via telemetry, and it's pure Rust. Proof this ecosystem isn't just sequencing tools anymore. 🧪🦀
